Just finished the game. Really enjoyed it

while it was jarring at the time I can see how maybe they wanted to subvert expectations by not having you play as Ellie the entire game. And honestly they did a pretty good job of taking a character like Abby and portraying them as a villain but showing their story in such a way that by the end you cant help but empathize with them to some extent

The fight at the end actually reminded me a lot of the last fight between solid snake and liquid ocelot in MGS4. In both of the Abby/Ellie fights I actually hoped the character that I was controlling wouldnt win the fight.

Also, was the fact that a supporting character was a young trans person seriously all it took to get trolls riled up and review bomb the game? Or was there more to that?

finally Im curious whether Ellie is headed back to Jackson. I imagine that is where Dina went with Potato since her family is there, but the way Ellie leaves the guitar behind I feel like that might symbolize her saying goodbye or forgiving Joel, but also that she might want her past to be behind her.

JFC apparently some people in the trans community are offended and upset because at certain points Lev is referred to by his deadname at some points and that the character was not created by trans writers

I dont even know where to begin with how dumb that criticism is

It seems some folk have a hard time following this games narrative at all. My advice? These people shouldn't play mature games. They clearly can't handle it. With that said the people crying probably just read the leaks at best anyway. I'd say Final Fantasy VII Remake is my current game of the year but this is a close second.

Oh damn I just realized that after you beat the game the title screen changes to show a boat on a shore, and in the distance you can see a building that is a famous landmark of Catalina Island

so that must mean that Abby and Lev made it there. I wasnt sure if she actually spoke to a firefly on the radio or if that entire thing was an elaborate ruse set up by the cobras to lure anyone looking for any remaining firefly members

Yeah in that scene. She was skin and bones the last time we saw her but it's very much possible she isn't now. I guess we will find out in part 3

I didn't even recognise her. She looked best in flashbacks where she wasn't buff for me. Abby reminds me of Sarah Conner at the end though.

I love how the seraphites don't like old world technology yet use guns and electricity. And when Abby brings it up to Lev he's like "well there ARE exceptions." Which I also found funny because just as that convo happened, right before I was thinking to myself what a bunch of hypocrits they are with their weird religious cult.

I just played on the scene on the horse where you are riding through the burning battleground on the island, and wow. One of the most incredible moments I've ever seen in a video game.

Ok, I gotta admit. I kind of do have a problem with having you brutally fight Ellie while playing as Abby. Definitely just really powerful. I don't really like that that's the choice they went with their encounter but I understand why they did.

There were multiple instances when the game forced me to do a thing I really didn't want to do.

Had no idea that that iconic dance/kiss scene from the E3 trailer would actually be in the game. I just assumed it was constructed for the trailer, and acted as a prologue to the first part of the story since it happens the night before it. Glad it popped up.

Finished it just now. Credits are rolling. Jesus the ending stuff is mighty powerful and emotional.

Also, I just miss Joel even more now. The Joel / Ellie dynamic was amazing and I'm just, sad we won't get anymore of that.

Much less that they didnt write the things theyre acting out. Theyre just acting andor voicing the role. They didnt write the story.

Exactly. I actually liked the story but I understand some won't. This doesn't however warrant death threats.

Everyone keeps saying that Ellie lost everything but there's nothing stopping Ellie from going back to Jackson. Besides herself. In that sense she does still have something. The only reasons she may not want to go back to Jackson is because she doesn't want to face Tommy or Dina. But Dina I could see easily taking Ellie back once Ellie explains she didn't actually kill Abby. Tommy might be a harder sell, since he was so worked up on the Farm when she said she wouldn't go.

I always thought that to be an actual problem with Last of Us 1 is it didn't go far enough and was absolutely trying to have things both ways, at the expense of gutting it's own themes.

When Joel is a rugged, classically handsome dad protagonist and all the villains are thuggish looking brutes then the visual design of the story is telling you something that the actual text isn't. When they added in that oh by the way all the guys you're fighting are cannibals my eyes rolled out of my fucking skull. You can't claim to be trying to tell a nuanced "both sides" story while using cartoonish shortcuts like this. Things didn't become interesting until literally the last bit of the game (which I would say is also the only time Joel displayed any significant agency as a protagonist).

This is something that it sounds like Last of Us 2 has actually fixed (I haven't played it and am not going to) and that's why you see a backlash. It's not consistent with how the first one did things.

It reminds me of some Kingdom Hearts fans on the internet with Kingdom Hearts 3. Only it was more justified with that game I guess having a 17 year build up. Some folk write their own narrative and spend years guessing how the story would/should go. Then when the games come out the narrative is often different so they claim the game is bad.

The Last of Us didn't need a sequel to me so I didn't give any thought how a sequel would go if they ever made one. The only thing I thought would happen is Joels Death and that happened here. I also didn't read the leaks. I agree this game game pacing issues and the story could have been told more coherently. I also think the first had a stronger narrative. However this game is improved in every other way over the sequel and I like what they went with. The first game had the plot drive the gameplay and this one has the gameplay drive the plot. Part 3 is inevitable and I'm intrigued where the series is heading.

Not really how it's presented. It's used as a cheap reveal when you're fighting through their camp just to double down on how they're the bad guys, and then never acknowledged again. There's no nuance to it, especially when directly contrasted with how the good survivors are presented.

idk, they seemed pretty desperate to get that deer ellie killed when they first met.
idk how youre supposed to give nuance to cannibals that are in maybe 10% of the game and arent the focus of the plot. it was supposed to show how little humanity there was left in the world and not anything else. I never felt like there was really any reveal to it. It just was.
