I feel like this should be simpler. My PC/Router is in one room and PS4 is on the other side of the apartment. WiFi is pretty bad so I'm running an ethernet cable across the ceiling.

Two things I'm trying to do:

  1. If I have movie files on my computer or an external HD, how can I watch them on my PS4/TV? I know the PS4 needs to format the HD a specific way to be able to read it but from what I'm reading that will make it so my PC can't read it then. Is that correct? I'd want to be able to add/remove videos on it as needed without having to reformat it every time.
  2. If I'm streaming a video on my computer, how can I cast, switch, etc that over? I used to just plug in my HDMI cord but now it's too far to do that. Is there an easy way given my current setup?

I've read a little about Plex which seems like it might work, but all of it was from a few years ago. Is there anything out now that's easy to use?
