Man that sound is so beautiful honestly man it's an instrument that always makes me feel deep somewhere inside

For some reason I love hearing it from outside a room 'cos feels like something is growing within the room

Good playing too :)

Yep. Accepted a full tuition ($50k a year) scholarship to Manhattan School of Music for Classical Performance. I will also be in jazz ensembles and such though, cause I play both

Thank you! I think the bass has a certain human singing quality with its range that a lot of other instruments dont. There are certainly times Id rather hear a violin, but the bass is definitely slept on a lot.

Oh thats right! I think I remember seeing you post that in a topic a few weeks back.

Bet youre a killer piano player too, then. You ever play much classical piano?

I went to a HS with a ridiculous full orchestra program, and we played Rachs 2nd piano concerto my senior year. The kid playing the piano part always blew my damn mind.

Not much classical besides the 2 years of competency we were all required to take in my undergrad. Definitely more comfortable with jazz and blues (I play blues and folk guitar as well)

I started playing jazz as a junior in high school and began my classical studies a little under 4 years ago when I got to college.

I like both. I started with jazz and blues is one of my favorite musics, but I love classical deeply as well. I chose classical because the degree seems more practical itself. Not that any performance degree is practical really unless you put in the work to get good. But if I take a classical audition and I have a jazz degree, they could reject me based on resume because theyre snooty, whereas if I have a jazz gig and I say I have a classical degree, theyll just say cool lol

Hmmm. I always thought that a jazz degree would be more versatile as Id assume jazz gigs are easier to come by. Plus big classical gigs are competitive as hell, but I guess you make decent money being on a sub list or playing in smaller local orchestras?

You certainly can. My goal is to be in a full time orchestra. But we will see!

There are a lot more jazz gigs, but they dont require a degree or anything in my experience, so long as you can play. Classical auditions and teaching positions you pretty much need a degree in classical music. It should be more like jazz imo.

Id agree. But I guess it makes sense to ween out players in big classical auditions that have no idea how to actually play lol

I dont envy anyone going the classical route. Thats fucking hard. I could never do it haha.

Its a tough road, but its what Im passionate about and I think I have the ability and work ethic. I know Ill be able to make a living playing with several smaller community orchestras, jazz playing, teaching, etc. if the dream doesnt happen, so I figure I may as well aim high.

You were jazz trumpet iirc from the last time we talked?

I see the appeal to go the classical route. I absolutely love performing, and miss it a ton. Im a percussionist, and have a music education degree. I was into orchestral percussion in college, and loved playing and performing.

But I went the education route, and mainly teach now, and never have time/energy to practice much anymore. Its sad.

Considering leaving the teaching profession though, and might go back to grad school for a masters in perc performance, or maybe get an audio engineering degree. Id be super interested in teaching at the university level, even if it was just adjunct. Some tough choices to make for sure.

I know a lot of music educators who feel similar. Its a shame, because the best music educators put so much time into it that they lose their instrument time. I know so many shitty music educators who graduated with a music ed degree and didnt practice for shit in college because Im gonna be teaching, not performing. Cant teach music if youre not good at it imo, so I commend you for actually taking your instrument(s) seriously while also pursuing education as a degree, it certainly is difficult to balance

Yep, exactly. And percussion specifically is evolving so damn fast, that I feel like in order to keep up or become a better teacher I need to get back to playing more. I miss playing marimba a ton. Bach on marimba is bliss for sure hah
