From what I've read it's just to show off in fictional stories. Reverse grip means you have less control over the sword, though learning to use reverse grip is helpful for when you'd be in a pinch.

So like with a katana, yeah it's mostly a fictional thing. That's not to say that there aren't specific techniques that use a reverse grip but they are generally used when drawing a sword to stab someone approaching from the rear. Reverse grip with a knife, balisong, or any other sort of short hand held blade is absolutely a thing.

Japanese Martial Arts like to get into training for really specific scenarios. There is an entire school of Koryu related to various ways to defend yourself in event you are in a tea ceremony and the person delivering the tea attacks you.

Practical for some knives. Generally not practical for swords - reach and leverage is limited, and the thumb can't exert the amount of control it would in a handshake grip.

It's in fiction mainly for style. Had very view real-world applications.

Lol

but what do you mean, like holding a knife/sword backwards? That would probably be ineffective since if you stab overhand youll hit the ribs instead of getting them unde it

Yeah, like I said in Japanese stuff it tends to be primarily from the drawing position, striking an opponent attack from the rear.

I want to go to that school. It'll more than likely never happen to me, but it would be awesome to learn.
