I never realised how much religion bogs down the early game for not very much benefit in the long run, especially with how competitive the AI is at higher difficulties.

Oftentimes you end up pumping 3 cities into holy site prayers just to have a chance at founding the last religion and have to play catch-up the rest of the early-mid game.

I make a religion just to combat my cities from converting to an enemies religion, but I dont bother trying to do a religious victory. The AI is just too good at it. Ill stick with culture, science or military.

Yeah that used to be my rationale but theres really no benefit in doing that, cos theres no real downside to getting your enemys religion.

That 10-20 you spend at the start kicking out holy sites could net you two settlers or an early army. Youre probably gonna get there eventually but the earlier you get them the quicker you just snowball.

Its changed my civ life lol
