Spoilers for the sequel have been available for months now. I read them all since I don't really care about TLOU. The controversial part of the storytelling is unusual for a video game but not unheard of in other storytelling media.

The beginning starts with Joel and Tommy saving Abby's group from infected
Abby shoots Joel in the knee when she finds out who he is
Abby turns out to be the daughter of the surgeon Joel shot at the end of the first game
Ellie tries to save Joel but is captured and forced to watch Abby beat Joel to death with a golf club
They knock out Ellie and leave her there
Dina (the girl Ellie kisses from the trailer) and her ex Jesse travel with Ellie to find Abby's group but Jesse dies at some point
You play about 10 hours of the game as Abby including a fight where you brutally beat Ellie and Dina (who's pregnant)
Abby is about to slit Dina's throat but spares them because her child companion Lev is watching
Dina begs Ellie to stay with her at their house and not chase Abby but Ellie leaves anyway
Ellie finds Abby and Lev sometime later where they've been captured and crucified by another group
Ellie escapes with them until they get to a boat where Ellie goads Abby into a fight by threatening to cut Lev's throat

The thing is that this is a tiny minority people are exaggerating to make up the entire fan base. People have known she was gay forever and no one cared. She wasn't the only gay character in the game either. There are other giant issues with the game and people are just straw manning every criticism as angry white cis males(of course cause generalizing a group is bad unless it isn't a group leftist try to pander to) crying.
