This is a debate on Twitter that people keep discussing that I personally believe in. Certain stuff with problematic themes will normalize horrible behavior and thinking as long as they exist.

Dystopian fiction has been popular since the 80's and has increased alongside a distrust of corporations, technology, and government, leading to more dystopian fiction leading to....

It's not a huge correlation but creators make works that are based on their version of reality and people consuming that media can reinforce beliefs that they have about reality.

Someone looking at lolicon is already a pedophile. Doesn't make it any more normalized.

It affects reality in the sense that it can make us emotional and make us think. It gives us an idea how we are as people.

What it doesn't do is make someone turn into a sexual deviant literally the moment they see some lewd image or go out and shoot someone the second they play GTA. It doesn't affect sane people like that.
