I doubt they're after a cancel, just a rebrand. Calling it "Jemima" should work fine, it's recognizable enough. Whether it's worth the trouble is up to them.

You don't get an obvious slap in the face like that with Aunt Jemima. A kid will just think "oh she's a member of my family".

I'm not too attached if they do change the name but meh.

The character came from a minstrel show and for decades the company hired actresses to travel the US feeding pancakes to white people and the slogans were written in incorrect English.

This isn't a spokesperson or character who happens to be black. Her race was central to her identity for all the wrong reasons (subservient, uneducated post-Civil War black woman).

My point was she's been updated to the more modern version of a mammie character.

The current depiction has been around since 93 and people have still had issues with it.

So there would be black people, even black youth if they had been taught this by their families, who would see that logo and know the meaning behind it and what it represents.

So yeah for some people (maybe not black/ignortant to the archetype) it would come across as just a black woman in passing.

As for what those characters look like now? Basically any black maid, cleaner, secretary, friend, etc... is an offshoot of a mammy archetype.

When I say updated look, I mean she's wearing modern clothing.

As for a friend, there is a trope of just "the black friend" that can encompass a mammy type of role. It's not all rigid and everything tends to overlap with other tropes.
