I remember this TV show or movie where aliens used prime numbers to help humans understand their language.

I learned in my astronomy class in college that we send out radio wave prime number patterns to make contact with potential aliens because the radio waves are cheap to produce, and prime numbers are a man-made construct, so another civilization wouldn't mistake it for naturally-occurring energy.

P cool.

I guess you would expect fewer prime numbers to appear in 2+ dimensional discrete spaces just as a result of basic statistical geometry. For example, if you have a rectangle with area of 32, that could be 1x32, or 2x16, or 48, or 8x4, or 16x2, or 32x1, but if you have a rectangle with area of 53, it can only be 53x1 or 1x53. So any random rectangle where you know the sides are integer length is three rimes as likely to have an area of 32 than 53.
