I learned in my astronomy class in college that we send out radio wave prime number patterns to make contact with potential aliens because the radio waves are cheap to produce, and prime numbers are a man-made construct, so another civilization wouldn't mistake it for naturally-occurring energy.

For example, if you have a rectangle with area of 32, that could be 1x32, or 2x16, or 48, or 8x4, or 16x2, or 32x1, but if you have a rectangle with area of 53, it can only be 53x1 or 1x53.
