Do you like living up North?

I couldn't imagine having to shovel snow every morning just to leave my house. Even if it's only a few days out of the year. I can't imagine weeks of below freezing weather. Do people just stay indoors for weeks on end during the really cold months?

During our "extreme months", It can get hot in the south, that's for sure. But at least at night 80-85 degrees with a bit of wind is totally tolerable and you can go outside. During the winter we'll have a few days where it's below 45-50 day and night. Then a break for a week or so where the highs are in the 50s, maybe even 60s. Then another few days where it gets really cold again. But it's nothing like weeks of constant near or below freezing day and night.

The wind is the only bad part. Snow and cold is fine.

I'd much rather it be like 10 degrees than 90 degrees.

? The ice is the worst part.

With ease. I fucking love the snow, I feel like a kid every time it snows, except now I'm old enough to use a machine that could mangle and entire limb if I act like an idiot with it. Give me tons of snow in winter over high heat and humidity in summer.

I've lived in NYC for practically my entire life. I moved to Florida for 2 years and when it was 70 degrees out people complained it was cold and I was still sweating my ass off. I had to move back to NYC since I disliked Florida so much.

Anyway, the winters haven't been getting warmer the last few years here. This winter in particular it was like it never got super cold and it snowed one time the whole winter and it melted immediately.

I can take the snow.
But the driving cold for months on end gets real old real quick, much more quickly then it ends.
That much I can't stand.

Yeah, but... can you realistically be outside long when it's 10 degrees? 90 you can be outside at a bar or lounge outside with a fan blowing and in the shade. You can be in a pool. There's places you can be outside where it's not completely intolerable. Then at night it's not much of an issue, particularly if there is a breeze. It seems during the North's most extreme months, the only option is indoors both day and night.

Well for one snow in the cities is gross and polluted and wet

Snow in the mountains is fluffy and silent and magical and it means you can go skiing and ice climbing and all this amazing stuff that only comes during a special time of year

If you just commute through the brown slush it probably does suck

Most of the winter here in Fargo would be tolerable if it wasn't so fucking windy.

Though when it starts hitting -30+ without the wind it gets just outright unbearable.

I don't like too much snow, but the cold doesn't bother me anymore. I ride my bike year-round, and I am completely honest when I say riding in 15 degrees is easier than riding in 95 degrees.

I love everything about living in the NYC metro area, but the only thing I hate is the cold and the snow. I'm glad winter was very mild this year, but snow can fuck right off. November 2018, the first snow storm of the season, had so much trouble getting home (trains backed up, car traffic backed up so it took 40 minutes to travel on local roads what usually takes 5 minutes), had to call out of work because I didn't get there in time, then I got sick the next day.

Despite the cold I don't want to leave the area.

I've been to Orlando during the November and December weather seasons and they were beautiful. 80 degrees in fucking DECEMBER?! SIGN ME THE FUCK UP. As a northerner you're like "It's fucking December, how in the world is it 80 degrees and not 30 degrees."

Also I googled Fargo. So weird it's right on the border with Minnesota. Some of it even looks like it's in Minnesota. Any history with that?

The funny part is the "cold" time in Florida is January. It drops to like 50 and people are out in winter coats. I'd be going out with a windbreaker or a hoodie and people stare.

Dude, I mean this from the bottom of my heart... The next time it's one of those days just remember that's there's poor fucks that have to act like 40 degrees for a few months is okay. And that 50 is a rising temperature. It's not fun and I hate it.

It's not that big a deal. The icy streets/widewalks kind of suck but you learn how to handle them and that's enough for all but the worst few days of the year. It's pretty unpleasant when the weather gets really cold, like below -30 C and the wind chill gets really awful (we got to -50 C wind chills here briefly this winter), but most of the winter thankfully isn't like that, and as long as you don't stay out for long enough for it to be unhealthy you get the really great feeling when you get home and start warming up. The worst stretches of winter are not a lot of fun, but the majority of it is easy to handle as long as you dress for it properly.

I'll definitely keep that in mind as I begrudgingly decide to wear jeans and shoes, or a windbreaker with shorts.
