I've only played when very young, but the twitch tournament and having an itch during quarantine has made me start to play and watch videos. I still struggle to see so much, but if anyone has any good references or videos go for it. I'm using mostly chess.com as my reference point for now

I don't have any videos for you, but tagging.

I played a couple of games chess last week after someone randomly asked me to on chess.com (shout out to @greengravy294 ) and could be convinced to play a few versus you for fun.

I started playing against my roommates in college and have been going to a local in-person club since last year (until quarantine started anyway).

I started around 800 rated about 6 years ago and I'm around 1600-1700 rated on chess.com now. A couple youtube channels I would recommend are:

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLQsLDm9Rq9bHKEBnElquF8GuWkI1EJ8Zp (a good series of tutorials that focuses on multiple aspects of the game including openings, mating patterns, tactics, and theory)

https://www.youtube.com/user/AGADMATOR (the most popular chess channel on youtube. Agadmator usually uploads 1 video per day covering a recent game between top level players. It's often hard to incorporate these ideas into your own play but he breaks down the game to a basic level and it's exciting to see how top level players play)

Another good thing to do is practice tactics/puzzles, so you can start to see some common patterns that might occur in your games. This is my favorite website to do that: https://chesstempo.com/chess-tactics/

The biggest thing I would say for newer players to improve is just to make sure you don't leave any pieces hanging (directly attacked by your opponent's pieces with no protection). As you continue to improve and blunder full pieces less often, your rating will probably skyrocket by a couple hundred points.

I too played when younger, though never with any particular skill. I knew some of the basic openings and some of the things to avoid though. I've thought about diving back in, but while I admire chess and the skill one can have with it, I'm content to stay largely on the sidelines.

As far as seeing more, I imagine chess puzzles might help train your brain to consider a broader assortment of options more quickly. I imagine reviewing some classic games move by move might help too, although high level play might not suit whatever tier you're currently in.

Chess is fun if you can find players with comparable skill to your own. I dont know where people would meet to play these days, but I do know some online venues were absolute shitshows back in the day. I recommend doing it in person, if you can.

This. I love watching Jerry's coverage of major events on twitch because he has a great way of explaining the action and potential lines of play in a way that's easily understood even if you're not a pro.

I've been watching the Pogchamps tournament and enjoying it a lot. Hikaru, Botez, and Hess are pretty good personalities to build this little surge around

XQC's 6 turn loss and the Fuslie / Natehill match are legendary.

I've just been doing puzzles on chess.com to brush up. It's funny that I've been playing chess casually my whole life with my family and friends but terms like skewer and pin are brand new to me. I guess I'm basic af
