They were my favorite things to watch right before my whole life went to shit as a kid. I don't know about that per se. But I hear it often enough out and about. Pachinko parlors certainly play it a lot (and have a ton of Eva stuff to try to lure you in). At obon matsuri last year it was played along with more traditional songs as one of the songs to dance too. That was really fun actually. They had the taiko drums going along with it too (it's also a song on Taiko no Tatsujin). As far as I know it has been the most popular song on karaoke every year since it has been released, so for literal decades.
