I feel like old movies should stay how they are. that's how they got made. move on. if you really want to change it that bad I think the only acceptable thing is to do a total remake. but like what Lucas did with star wars I feel is a "sin" in cinema. movies should remain in their original form as a work of art. Lucas never could stop fucking with his old movies and that's why lots of people don;t like him

As Falco will tell you about Andross, I will say that Lucas is an insane fool.

As far as the changes in the SW movies go, some were good and some were bad. Most of them were pretty minor changes...I never really cared much and I was a pretty big SW fan back in the day. They were far from breaking the movies or anything. It was kinda like "meh or whatever" they are his movies and if he wants to release changed versions, why not. It's not like the old ones don't still exist for the people that are really bothered by it.

Eh, prior to selling the franchise, it's his work and he's got a right to do with it what he likes.

Kingdom of Heaven is the one that always gets tossed around of a film that becomes significantly better in the re-edited Director's Cut

An injection of the finest CGI that 1997 had to offer was exactly what the OT needed, oh yes.

There's very nearly a 0% chance that a film changed retroactively will be better for it.

A director's cut, though, with footage added back in that already existed (such as the discussion between Han and Jabba in Episode IV) is usually worthwhile. Adding cut scenes back in, yes. Adding brand new scenes/changing original scenes (like the Vader "NOOOO!" in Return of the Jedi, or Hayden Christensen's force ghost)? Please don't.

An exception would be something like Justice League, where two different directors had two different visions. Changing the film to suit the first director's vision is definitely worth doing imo.

As I said in another topic, Lucas worked hard to limit people's exposure to the originals as much as he could. once the special editions came out, tv channels could not air the originals anymore. and stores were banned from selling the originals. he tried to destroy the originals as much as was in his control. he is ashamed of the old versions.

No. Director's Cuts are fine as a money making opportunity and as a way for directors to revisit work. Nobody would agree that a director can lockdown the original and change something so culturally iconic. We historically preserve these things.

George Lucas is literally just mad that his ex wife is responsible for Star Wars. She saved A New Hope in editing. The original cut was horrible. I cannot be emphatic enough how bad his version was.

Oh, are you sure? Go find the original cut of Star Wars in a store someplace. Find it on DVD, or BluRay. Find it on an official (read: non-pirate) streaming service.

Reading the original script for Star Wars feels a lot like watching Episode I. George Lucas didn't get worse over time--people stopped saving him from his own bad writing.

Most changes that Lucas did dont bother me much, except the infamous Han shot first scene. A change like that, which cheapens Hans character arc for the rest of the movie, does bother me.

The biggest issue fans have with Lucas isnt that he made those changes necessarily, but he also made it nearly impossible for anyone to buy or find the original cuts of the movies that people loved in theaters

It added back 45 minutes of actual plot and character interactions that were cut because test audiences only wanted dumb action

Here's the thing with Georgie boy.

He did come up with Star Wars but the Star Wars he came up with was garbage. It took a lit of other people's input to make it into something great.

So naturally, when he starts making this special edition changes, they're garbage. Naturally, when he gets more creative control over the prequels, they're garbage. Because they're Lucas' Star Wars, which is garbage.

exactly. original Star Wars great DESPITE Lucas.

all the best parts of star wars came from ideas of other people working with him. The only reason they didn't suck was he had a team that was holding his hand and giving him advice and aid. as soon as he grew his head too big and fired all his advisors and went out on his own, they started sucking
