Gotta be Gen 5 > Gen 6 for me, they're just worlds apart.

Besides the jump to 3D yea gen 6 was leaps and bounds beyond gen 5. Metriod Prime just blew my mind and it still holds up today.

I dont think gen 5 to gen 6 was really all that big

if you look at late era n64 games compared to early PS2 games, the difference is not that pronounced

its obviously gen 4 to gen 5

the difference was huge, saying otherwise is factually wrong

draw distance alone significantly increased, not to mention texture and animation quality

Ps2 to ps3, I think. The advent of HD tvs and hdmi hookups really boosted visuals beyond anything we had expected.

Obviously 2D to 3D was a huge leap, but 3D didn't become as visually pleasing as the best 2D games until HD, imo

Definitely 5>6. When I think of a video game that was so far and beyond with graphical quality compared to it's present day competition, I immediately think of the Resident Evil remake in 2002 which still looks realistic to this day.

Melee had the biggest impact on me. The N64 games had representations of what the characters should look like in 3D, Melee had the actual characters.

In general, no longer needing to infer details had the biggest impression on me.

I mean in general these cross generation comparisons have issues with late and early releases, when developers are really good and really bad with the hardware

DOS and Atari?

atari is gen 2 actually

wikipedia has all the info on the generations

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_generation_of_video_game_consoles

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_generation_of_video_game_consoles

NES didn't appear until third generation. the first generation was mostly pong clones of various varieties. and there is next to no purpose in playing them today. they are the most basic bare bones idea of what a video game is. even people who played them back in the day probably look back on them and chuckle about how shit they were

It's probably more due to childlike wonder, but playing the Super Mario 64 demo for the first time at Toys R Us when I was 11 is still one of the most surreal, jaw-dropping, "how can this even exist" moments of my gaming life.

Well sure but were talking about the graphical leap from one generation to the nextso I think comparisons of late era earlier gen to early era later gen games are valid

Seeing Starfox on SNES going to N64 didn't impress me as much as N64 to GC

I wanna say the obvious going from 2D to 3D, but the N64 kinda sucked and the GC kinda rocked with hardware
