Most of the necessary to even mechanics in Ogre Battle are hinted at or explained in the manual only... and some that are mentioned in-game are mentioned in very late stages of the game

La-Mulana famously bragged that all relevant information was in the manual, and it was right.

But ya, NES manuals are works of art. I still remember all the cool drawings and stuff in the Zelda 1 and 2 manuals. I also remember the Zelda 2 manual saying the enemies sometimes pop out of P bags, instead of the other way around.

My copy of Breath of Fire 2 was from a used game store, and in the back of the manual I still remember the one thing written there "Blu is in a dis"... that's it.

Ya, I think I stopped caring around the N64 era, which may also have been the last era of big giant manuals.

Depends on the game. It's largely become unnecessary due to in-game tutorials, etc, and the fact that many -- if not most -- retail games don't even include instruction manuals any more. Even the Pokemon games, which had absolutely gorgeous instruction manuals, haven't been doing it.

that was the best part of old PC strategy games and some infinity engine games (BG1, BG2, and IWD all have *amazing* manuals.)

It's not that the manuals was unnecessary in a sense to people who enjoyed it, it was just nice to look at art work and read some back stories, but I know you're a boomer so you don't enjoy that stuff.
