I haven't owned a PS4 or XBONE.

Buying physical games, can you put the disc into the system and play without downloading the game from a server? Do the discs all contain the full game?

Or do you actually have to download the full game from a server to run it. In which case why even put the data on the cd.

Depends on the game. Some discs contain the full game, but IIRC they can only hold up to 45GB so if a game is bigger, the rest gets downloaded from a server.

Either way you have to download the entire game.

Edit: there are some exceptions. I believe Red Dead Redemption 2 and Final Fantasy 7 Remake both have two discs that need to be installed.

For literally every game? So basically the cd only performs a check for ownership and the software only ever runs from internal storage for every game, right?

it's gonna be shitty in the distant future if anyone wants to play Ps4 or XBone games and the old servers are taken down. there might be an entire generation of gaming that will just be impossible to revisit someday. all because they make you download day 1 patches on almost every game before you can play

Single player games have the whole game on the disc. (So long as it's not cardboard >_>)

Yeah, you can have some circle argument about DLCs (I'm sure some are furiously typing such comments as I write this), but very few of them change the entire game and they can be missed altogether. Some rare times do they add value to the game.

In some cases, you have day 1 patches and it's good to have internet for it --- but some of these patches are obnoxious in size.
