I really liked the first 1/3 of the movie, up to the point where they go through the German trenches and come out into the rear, it had a good sense of urgency and excitement. Then the movie becomes a series of boring scenes in meadows. If the British are just driving around in the open behind the lines harvesting trees, why can't they just attack the Germans from the rear?

Then, ridiculously, a flowing river takes the main character back to the British army. It makes the entire trench war premise look like a joke. Benedict Cumberbatch's scene is just a cameo, even though he was billed as one of the stars. We don't even get a big battle scene, for all the money and technical work on display. Just one shot of a few hundred extras running out of trenches. What a waste.

I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I personally thought that the faux one-shot format actually didn't do the narrative much justice, as it really did nothing other than make it feel like everything was within a twenty minute walk of everything and made it feel too confined in a negative way.

Irregardless, for all intensive purposes, I could care less.

i didn't think it was a great movie but he had some fantastic visuals and i enjoyed it

i think it's a better version of dunkirk

they're both pale in comparison to Thin Red Line though

i compare the three because they're war films told just extremely visually

1917 was going for more of a Hitchcock sense of tension, rather than a typical action war movie.
The river scene was..interesting...Some suspension of disbelief is required here in that.
But in my opinion, it was a very good movie.
