It seems weird that they'd ask you to put your coworkers down as a reference when you might not want your coworkers to know you're job searching.

It'd only make sense to call them AFTER you've accepted the job offer... right?

Does it need to be a coworker as a reference? I used my supervisor but she was the only person I told because she was awesome.

What I always did was put down two of my best friends numbers down and had them say I used to work for them and talk me up. Not like they verify what the reference says is actually true

Ive only given references when were going to the offer stage. And then I give them a heads up to expect a call.

You're not supposed to put your coworker. You're supposed to put your stoner friend who lives with his mom, and tell them to act like a coworker.

References dont do shit after the fact of an interview really. But if you get a reference on the front end that leads to your interview, thats different.

Back when I used to be a hiring manager I would call references, just to see if they put in the effort to complete the task. Even if it was just a friend that they listed as a previous employer or coworker, I would appreciate the effort.

But 99% of applicants put in fake nonworking numbers just to fill the box in Hope's I didnt call them.

90% of applicants lie about job history too. My brother was a hiring manager at a steakhouse and never verified diddly because turnover was so high. He'd mainly just look at their hours of availability.
