a case in my area is making big news. A black teenager was asked for his i.d. then tased when he would not give it to the cop iirc. Would you always surrender your i.d. even if you weren't required to iirc.

Not that I can remember. But i'd just do it because why not? I'm never guilty of anything.

It's usually the law that you must possess a valid ID so there's literally nothing wrong with being asked to show yours. Being tased for not doing so is a different matter though.

I probably would, just because I don't want to start something with a cop, regardless of my rights. Don't want to be brutalized.

As for interaction, only ever really interacted twice, both being pulled over. Once for a stop sign, once for being 10 or 15 over in the middle of nowhere, hint, everyone speeds there and slowing down after annoyed everyone behind me.

I was walking home around somewhere between 9 and 11 PM, and the cops stopped me, they ran my ID, and I was free to walk on, no problems in like 5 minutes, and no, my rights weren't violated.

I was a passenger with my sister when she was once pulled over for not wearing her seat belt. After the police asked for her ID and insurance, he came over to my window and asked me for my ID.

I didn't really think anything of it at the time, this was years ago, but do find it a bit strange today that I had to give my ID when I wasn't driving and wasn't the one who broke any law.

I guess it's so they can run my name for warrants or history. Guess they figure it's a way to catch more criminals, I guess?

Yeah it's not a big deal unless you make it a big deal. I had to wait a couple hours to get my license plus a lot more getting it renewed over the years. Sometimes I go up to a cop and say "HERE take a gander at that ID" Just to get some mileage out of it.

no I've never had to show my ID to a cop period. But I also am white so that is probably why

I also have aspergers and I consider myself very lucky that I am not black because I sometimes wonder if I could have survived to my current age if had been black and autistic and likely had to have talked to angry cops over the years.

Makes me think about actual autistic black people....

I didn't want to make a big deal out of it. My record was clean. Just still, do find it a bit strange when I think about it these years later.

I've also wondered if it's a way for police to have probable cause to search a vehicle? For example, say a vehicle has five people in it but the driver is clean. They then ask for the other four people's IDs and one of those four people maybe have a drug history? Boom, police may now have cause to want to search your car. Pretty dirty, but it wouldn't surprise me if that's a reason why cops would want to check all IDs.

The one time I ran into a nice cop my friend was driving the car and I was the passenger. He asked for the drivers ID and registration (pulled over for a tail light). The cop came back and asked for my ID left and came back. Then told me and my friend to step out the vehicle and switch seats because my friends license was expired.

My friends license expired a year after obtaining it because he was supposed to give proof of his green card. The cop let us go because he never saw a driver license expire so fast.
