This was THE 3D Zelda-style game until OoT came out. When I got it, I remember thinking "yeah, the SNES one was cool, I'll give this one a shot", and was floored by how ambitious and epic it felt for a 3rd party game.

When you're on that dragon bro that shit was epic. As a kid i played this game so much. I didn't know it came out before OoT. Now I'm even more impressed.

My favorite character was the robot.

I still haven't played Mischief Makers.

That and Space Station Silicon Valley are probably my biggest "play this next" games on the N64 (of the games I haven't played).

Climbing Mt. Fuji never got old (when I was 5). I played this game a ton but would get stuck all the time.

Eventually I knew the game well enough I could beat it in less than half a day. I want to say like 4 or 5 hours, maybe a little less.

Tbh if there's any classic 5th gen game I don't want to get remade, it's this one. The game's goofy charm & surreal atmosphere works so well largely because of the low-poly early N64 aesthetic; an HD remake wouldn't be the same at all.

Came in to mention this

this game did the 3D Zelda formula a full year before OoT came out

it absolutely should be listed among influential games of all time

Never really thought about a remake tbh. You're right in that they used the low poly art really well.

I gotta confess as a kid I had no idea what was going on lol. Idk exactly when the last time I played it was. I tried using an emulator but I couldn't get the settings to work. I have an ED64 now so I'll have to load it up some time.

I still love OoT a lot but yeah it's weird how the vast majority of the "innovations" it's credited with can actually be attributed to Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon/Mega Man Legends. The former was the first to do the formula (had to check which one came first & it looks like Mystical Ninja came out 4 months earlier in Japan), while IIRC the latter was the first to have (the equivalent of) Z-targeting.
