Bulbasaur trivializes her since her Starmie has no psychic moves. But even if you went with a different starter you still have access to Bellsprout/Oddish and Pikachu by that point. All of which can handle her pretty easily.

I will say she is harder in FR/LG because inevitably Water Pulse will cause confusion and you'll watch your Bulbasaur punch itself in the dick over and over instead of fighting. You'll still win but it just takes longer.

Brock and Misty both have pretty punishing gyms if you are just trying to push through.

Charmander gets picked on frequently from a young age and has to grow up quick if you don't train a tough bug or get lucky with Pikachu. Another poster said Oddish.

Your Squirtle may not even know a water based move by the time you get to Brock and if it does, he may get knocked out right away.

For all the people who are saying it's easy, using Bulbasaur is baby mode, grow the fuck up.

I don't know what PokeSav is. Are you cheating? Sounds less fun if you're not just going out and putting work in, catching and breeding and battling endlessly. Grind.

I play romhacks that make the games actually a bit challenging and I never grind to the point where stuff is easy. If I can make it through a dungeon without any pokemon fainting and without using any items than it's too easy.

If you are using Squirtle at all, you'll have a water move to take care of Brock. And even Charmander isn't that afraid of Brock because his Pokemon don't know rock moves and Onix, despite being a giant rock snake, had less attack than Squirtle.

And honestly Starter choice barely matters by Misty because Bellsprout/Oddish.

And why wouldn't someone use Bulbasaur? The only Grass Pokemon that gives it competition in Gen 1 is Eggsecutor. Whereas Blastoise is outclassed by Starmie (and Lapras) and Charizard doesn't stack up super favorably against Arcanine.

At that point in the game, getting Abra can be the biggest fucking headache. You're literally better off just using the mew glitch and nabbing the psychic TM asap if you really want to use a psychic type early on because even if you get Abra, you still have to grind it out to level 16 to evolve it which is a headache because it only has teleport until it evolves. I'm pretty convinced that Abra was supposed to be the psychic magikarp then late in development they decided to lump him into the trade evos for a more unique approach.

Of all the gym leaders of all the gyms, from gen 1 to probably gen 6, "use your starter for every fight" is a winning strategy. The fact that Misty bucks this trend sets her above other gym leaders.
"Just catch an Oddish" means extra work that other leaders do mot require. In fact, catching and raising multiple pokemon is usually a losing strategy. It just thins out your exp.

Also, for this reason, Whitney is not an issue. She's very easy to overpower if you're not holding yourself back.

Pikachu has crap defense and is ganked by Bubble Beam if you fail the level check.

Catching a new Pokmon for that towns gym leader is almost always a grind most people avoid.

Mistys not that hard, but shes probably one of the most likely to punish you for being underlevelled.

Actually not really. Their special stat sucks ass so you can brute force it with ember.

Also, as a Charmander single runner for early game, you can skip Misty, do the SS Anne stuff, gank all the trainers to the right of Diglett Cave, and you SHOULD have Charizard with Wing Attack by then.

New level curve (Elite Four is mid to upper 70s), trainers have more pokemon, better teams, better movesets, all trainers use boss AI, bosses always have 6 pokemon, and Elite Four and Champion randomly pick one of four teams.

Haven't played it yet, but sounds really good.

I don't know about Renegade Platinum, but I've been watching a stream of Soul Silver which seems to be made by the same guy.

The most notable thing is that the enemy teams are actually competently made. Important trainers like gym leaders or Rocket Executives always have six Pokemon. Trainer movesets are much better balanced. It's pretty common for them to have moves to counter their type weaknesses (Bugsy, for instance, has a Yanma that knows Ancient Power). And across the board, levels have been increased.

Just to compare, Falkner in the base game has a level 9 Pidgey and a level 13 Pidgeotto. The former knows Tackle and Sand Attack, the latter knows Tackle, Sand Attack, and Gust. Gust is his biggest hitter at 40 power.

Soul Silver Falkner has:
  • Level 12 Chatot
  • Level 12 Farfetch'd (Made Fighting/Flying instead of Normal/Flying)
  • Level 12 Doduo
  • Level 14 Murkrow
  • Level 14 Swablu
  • Level 15 Pidgeotto (Which knows Mud Slap for any electric types you might want to fight him with)
It's hard to find full movelists, but all of these Pokemon apparently know Aerial Ace, a 60 power move that never misses.

Something to note with ROMhacks is that most of the time the "difficulty curve" is stupidly over the top, just in the other direction of way too difficult rather than way too easy. To the point that its no fun since you need to get yourself stupidly overlevelled to even stand a chance because the guy making it has no idea what "difficult" is. ROMhacks like Renegade Platinum I think aren't quite this bad, but many ROM hacks make the common mistake of "wouldn't even count as hard, its just stupd OP"

Stuff like Ultra Shiny gold X or Emerald Enhanced suffer from this problem.

Storm Silver is fantastic. It is by the same guy and it's one of my favorite hacks out there. He's also done Blaze Black 2 and Volt White 2 which I have heard good things about as well.
