It's a strategy game, kinda...

But to get the 100% ending you need to get all the characters, find all the secret zones, and collect 15+ secret items of which only maybe 2 of them you'd encounter naturally (burnhild and herostar)

Yet, back in the day, this was ACHIEVABLE... before GameFAQs

So, what happened1?

Is this good design?

I'd put SMT: Nocturne, FFX-2, Vanilla FFXII, a couple of the BoF games, and at least the first 2 Suikoden and Shenmue games on the list as serious contenders.

I don't remember Nocture's convoluted stuff, and FF12 is pretty vanilla (except for the Hunts)... but ya, FFX-2 definitely takes the cake for weird 100% requirements.

For SMTN it's the Pixie you're given at the very beginning. If you don't keep her or whatever her ancestor fusions are down the line, there's a door in the Kalpas you can never open and the True Demon Ending is forever locked out in that playthrough.

Vanilla FF12 has the 4 non-descript chests that you can't open any of or you'll never be able to get the Zodiac Spear. There's nothing special about any of them, you're never told not to touch them, and they're all early enough in the game where you're scumming every item you can get. It's fixed in the Zodiac Age release, but how they ever thought that was funny at Squeenix is beyond me.

Even following a 100% guide I somehow blew the special ending for FFX-2. I'm guessing it was one of the stupid hot springs scenes, but I'll never know.
