Even when I look like shit in the mirror, my phone's front camera comes in and makes me look like a model by comparison.

I swear it adds cheek bone definition, makes my hairline look better, etc. There's no active filter or anything. Yet you go online and everyone always complains that they look worse in their selfie photos.

Anyone else find they look better in selfie photos? For the record, I don't take selfies, but I've just noticed this by playing with my front camera.

Maybe it's a filter you have on. Do I look better in selfie photos? In my opinion, I think I look about the same.

Still yeah some cameras can improve appearance. They can also make someone look like shit.

My cousin once told me that he's better looking than his reflection is.

My Galaxy Note automatically turns on a filter when you use the front-facing camera. It can smooth the skin to remove wrinkles and blemishes, give a warmer color, narrow the jaw line, and adjust the eyes.

I have the budget model Galaxy phone and it does the same thing, which I honestly think is annoying because it makes the picture look less sharp

good selfies are mostly about good angles and lighting. most people aren't flattered at every single angle

Back when I did film photography I had a Tiffen diffusion filter which looked like a slightly warped piece of glass. It would smooth out most minor skin imperfections like pimples or small wrinkles and give a soft-focus effect.

Back then there was no such thing as Photoshop, so any special effects had to be done with filters. I had a whole gear bag full of them, star filters for creating sparkling reflections, foggalizers for creating a dream-like effect, various color adjustment filters for using daylight film with fluorescent and incandescent lighting, polarizers for removing glare, etc.

I still carry polarizers for my digital camera, as they're useful for eliminating glare off glass or water, and I still have a star filter which produces very nice effects when photographing vehicles, but everything else has been replaced with Adobe Lightroom.

I can relate. I did stage lighting for 7 or 8 years and you can't fix theater in post...not entirely the same problems, but many overlapping issues times 150ish since each light was "tuned" for a specific effect within each scene.
