Finally returning to the Resident Evil series. I've made a topic for each game I've played so far (1, 2, 3, CV, REmake, 0) and now we come to the big one.

This is actually the only RE game I played back when it came out. Rented it for the GameCube and got a few hours in, but felt like I was missing out on the series as a whole coming in at 4. The last thing I can remember doing is fighting and beating the tall bald dude that turns into a centipede looking monster. Always swore I'd get back to it and 15 years later I am.

Look at this MGS codec shit. I don't remember any of this. Man these controls are gonna take some getting used to. I know this was groundbreaking at the time and pretty much changed the entire genre of over the shoulder 3rd person shooters, but having a rough start. Knife has it's own button. That's good. X is run. Triangle map. Touchpad inventory.

Man I remember the inventory space being a massive problem for me as a teen. Not being able to pick up every item and save it went against everything about how I played most games. Now I get it with the survival horror and all, but that and limited saves gave me a bad first impression back then.

Hmm weapons actually have levels and stats. Coming off a replay of RE0 an hour ago, this is jarring. Actually replayed all the games in the past 2 weeks. Platinumed CVX, REmake and 0 too which...was quite a lot of work.

That first encounter went horribly. The knife doesn't seem to be on Code Veronica's level, but I did jump out of a second story window.

Alright knife can down people if you're good it seems. No ammo and 1 smidge of health. This might just be a test run.

Oh key items don't take up inventory space. Great.

FUCKING CHAINSAWED MY HEAD OFF! First death. Metal as hell. Well...fuck. Gonna have to not corner myself in I guess. Did get a ton of items from that town before I died. Including a yellow herb, which I don't know what the hell that does. Chicken eggs too. Gonna start over from scratch to conserve more health and ammo.

I think I got an easy pattern for small groups. Head shot, roundhouse kick, knife 'em while they're down. It's the groups and getting cornered that's killing me. The beginning of every RE is always the hardest anyway. Lack of knowledge, skill and super under armed.

Including a yellow herb

Green herb: heal, combine 2 or 3x for stronger heals.

Red herb: Combine with Green for full heal.

Yellow: Combine with Green for a heal and larger lifebar.

R+G+Y is ideal.

Chicken eggs can be thrown or eaten for a little health. It's hilarious.

Well that's one hell of an opening. Finally killed the chainsaw asshole. Got some gold bricks. Late title card drop. Nice.

Alright we got weird blue shooting thing collectibles. Don't spoil me on what they get me. My inventory's already getting pretty packed and I'm rolling in dough. Can't wait to meet the stranger.

Wow these villagers really just fucking melt. Sure that's a graphical restriction given how many of them are on screen, but wonder if there's a story reason for it. Again, don't tell me. Just speculating out loud.

Handgun bullets seem to do almost not damage anyway, so the kick, knife combo's even more effective. Jesus, just roundhouse decapitated a guy. Leon either got super buff and did some training when he started working for the President, or he was really slacking in 2.

Coulda swore this game used ink ribbons. Maybe it was just having to find a type writer to save that annoyed me as a kid.

Aw yeah running away from the bolder. This and GOW. The grandfather of QTE set pieces.

Oh wow this guy. I totally forgot about him. Luis. And there's the giant. Love his look. Chapters and stat screens? Still getting over just how not RE this all is. I am digging it.

82% hit ratio, 30 kills.

Damn. Lost my jacket already? Least they left me my weapons and items.

YEAH! The merchant! What are ya buyin'? Shit I can just buy the rocket launcher now? Not gonna, but that's crazy. Question. Do attache upgrades stack? Like if I wait for later in the game can I buy the next biggest one without having to buy this one? Or do I need to buy them all in order?

You can skip attache case upgrades, but it's not a good idea.

I know. Easier said than done. Really gotta used to this aged aiming. I'm sure I will, but it's hard going back to this loose control when I've played more modern games that have improved it so much.

RE2make is so much better and most people who say otherwise have nostaglia blindness and forget how awkward RE4's controls are.

But as the other user said, just aim for the head. Shooting in the chest is wasting bullets.

Eh this is a half truth

Dr Salvador is in the villiage by the exit.

He just spawns to where you are if you grab the shotgun

As such you can actually kill him twice if you wish

Yeah thanks Drizz. Not gonna read that. As dumb as the RE stories are in each game, I enjoy them. Liking this action movie plot set up so far. Leon's even dropped a corny as hell hero line or two so far.

PS4. Thought about Wii, but figured I'd play with more classic controls first. Might go back at a future date and see how the Wii motion stuff goes. Believe I heard it can make the game too easy.

Yeah, you gotta play pro mode on Wii because the motion controls do for sure make it a lot easier, but they also make it the best console version

If shooting the hand is hard, wait for them to light it then pop them in the legs.

They'll drop to knees/back, but the fuse is already lit.

Chapter 2 down. The one spot with all the bridges and shacks cost me all my handgun ammo. Also went fishing. Now my inventory is full of fish. Wanna see how much they sell for, but they make good healing items. On chapter 3 now. Getting the hang of it.

Yup. On 1-3 now.

Hot take. This is a really good game. Aiming takes some getting used to, but it's super tense, great setting and atmosphere, getting combat down is fun. Shotgun is my bread and butter with crowd control. Using the knife when I can. Grenades are also super useful and using them frees up inventory space.

Making bank now with the merchant dude. Not sure if I should sell ammo for guns I don't have yet. Can't buy ammo, so seems like it could be valuable. But it does eat up inventory space. Yeah not worth much price wise. I'll hang on to it. Sold all my fish. Got enough herbs and took up too much space.
