The Trump administration moved forward Friday with plans to scale back a century-old law protecting most American wild bird species despite warnings that billions of birds could die as a result.

Officials said in a draft study of the proposal that it could result in more deaths of birds that land in oil pits or collide with power lines or other structures.

More than 1,000 species are covered under the law, and the changes have drawn a sharp backlash from organizations that advocate on behalf of an estimated 46 million U.S. birdwatchers.

The study did not put a number on how many more birds could die but said some vulnerable species could decline to the point where they would require protection under the Endangered Species Act.

Former U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Director Dan Ashe and independent scientists have said the change could could cause a huge spike in bird deaths potentially billions of birds in coming decades at a time when species across North America already are in steep decline.

The proposal would end the governments decades-long practice of treating accidental bird deaths caused by industry as potential criminal violations under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

Industry sources kill an estimated 450 million to 1.1 billion birds annually, out of an overall 7.2 billion birds in North America, according to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and recent studies.

I think he is trying to establish strong personal business connections with industries so that he will be in a good business position when he comes out of the presidency.

probably some industry people asked him to let these bird deaths slide as "accidents" and he knows it'll put him on good terms with them for when he's back to just being a businessman

TBF, why are windmills excused?

And it's not only birds. Endemic bats are also victims to windmills. This coming straight from the windmill company itself, even sought an exemption to allow an extra hundred+ bat deaths.

too bad none of that will matter as the second he's out of office the city of New York has charges ready against him for a multitude of crimes. Trump is going to die in prison. that will be how his story ends
