I remember it was very dark, gothic, and "scary" at least for when I was a child of like 6 or 7. The intro sequence is some amorphous evil entity waking up. We either had a sword that could kill it and it broke (turning into a broken sword in our inventory iirc) or something like that.

The prologue area was this bleak, nearly abandoned town. I can't remember the combat but I'm pretty sure it was turn based. It was not Secret of Mana or Mystic Quest, nor was it Evermore. I know that for a fact. I recall it was a pretty dark game because it scared my sister who watched me play it a few times. Overall the writing and story was too complex for babby me, so that might be a clue.

Skipped through the first quarter of a longplay. That's not it, I actually never played that as a kid.

I wish I knew more about this white whale game. It's been bugging me for a few days.

Lennus II

Hmm. This one is really close. The opening name-your-character screen looks deadon. But I don't remember it being so colorful or elf-filled.

Illusion of Gaia

Nicely done. Mystery solved. Yep, those are all the monsters and skeleton enemies right away and that bleak, weird opening. Not the kinda RPG for a little kid at all.

I came in here to comment how much I hate these topics because I'm pretty sure they all end up unsolved and the tc was just trolling the whole time. I guess that wasn't the case this time

I'm looking at it now too and the trilogy it's from is impressively dark for the era, and some of the imagery for Gaia in particular is definitely tough for a kid. I'm not surprised it stuck with me.

Illusion of Gaia was great, was also marked by it as a kid.

And wait, Soul Blazer is a trilogy? I loved the one I played...

Edit: oh, Soul Blazer, Illusion of Gaia and Terranigma. Yep, all 3 were great.

Tbh I was like 6 and it's also likely that I could have just picked it up off an existing save on the main menu not knowing any better. My Dad would come and go with tons of old games and systems then because he resold them constantly. I also played Gargoyle, Evermore, Castlevania and so on. I was a very easily scared kid. My imagination colors a lot of my early memories.
