That's the kind of games we should be banning from the store.

There's no reason to allow that kind of garbage onto the store in any way.

Nah I have a day job to take care of money. I was actually gonna even give it away free until it ended up taking waaaaay longer than I expected to make this one and decided having an actual budget for subsequent ones would make development faster.

Started with Level Up. Even as somebody who normally finds theme enthusiasm cringy af, the way the book puts everything in gaming terms is cute.

In the intro (Press Start!) he says that every single chapter of the book is about gameplay, which is a good sign because that's exactly what I've discovered about the game making process: it's a game first and foremost.

Level 1 (chapter 1) was titled "Welcome N00bs" and didn't tell me a lot I didn't already know, but it was a neat little history of video gaming and had a great breakdown of all the roles within the process of game development.

Oh hey I just realized this was written by a guy named Scott Rogers.

Is that you, @Scotty_Rogers ?

Might read some of those some time. A lot of newer video essay game critiques on YouTube are starting to focus on game design principles and less on the end user experience in their discussions. Probably a sign that younger people are taking video games a lot more seriously than their older counter parts.

I've been watching stuff like GMTK, Game Design with Michael, Patrick Hollerman and Extra Credits for a couple of years now. I'll let you know how (these) actual textbooks compare.

First couple of levels (chapters) were pretty good.

Level 1 ("Welcome N00bs") didn't tell me a whole lot I didn't already know but it was upfront that it might not so it's cool. Did have a pretty good overview of all the jobs involved in game development and production though.

Level 2 ("Ideas") was pretty cool too. Had tips on brainstorming, considering your audience, deciding on your audience, and overcoming writer's block (or designer's block, or whatever).

Level 3 (about story) was freaking great. It had lots of important considerations for gameplay and story, took note of a lot of common problems with video game stories and had some consideration for characters and stuff too.

Level 4 (design documents) was also freaking great. I feel a lot more confident about marketing and stiff too. I wouldn't have expected the chapter have been relevant for that too but it totally was.

So do you guys even care about this topic? lol

a lot of very successful games are fairly light on the gameplay part though so I dunno

It's not time for that but I probably will need lots of testers.

Haven't seen anything about level design yet but I can recommend the above youtube channels. Best I know is probably Patrick Hollerman, but he only has a couple on yt.

I'm just about a one-man team working in my spare time. Mrs. DevsBro does some basic administrative tasks, and I got my one friend who's nerdier than I am to do a couple of designs but otherwise it's just been me. I started in 2016. I maaay be halfway done. I kinda need a vector artist or two but that's so expensive...

You should market it, try getting it on steam or an online game distributor, get the word out. A good proof of concept could lead you to getting in contact with people who want to work with you and maybe even someone investing in this.

Well, I can't really make a pitch without enough resources. Ideas are cheap.

And the half (hopefully) that's done is all code with placeholder resources.

Besides, four-five years out is way too early for an announcement.
