Like... could you make a kid friendly survival horror game, based on the Scooby Doo franchised and therefore aimed at children, using the same mechanics as other survival horror games. But obviously the "monster" doesn't have an unsettling design, and is clearly a guy in a mask. All the scares come from the mechanics, being defenseless against an enemy and having to hide rather than fight.

Would that work? Or do survival horror games RELY on the genuine horror aesthetic that comes with those games?

Sure. Look back at early survival "horror" games. Alone in the Dark was hardly scary, but I knew what it was going for and appreciated it nonetheless.

Yes easily

Lots of survival games are not horror and lots of non horror games have horror elements

Remember Sapiens?

I mean Resident Evil can be very goofy, and it is the kind of defining name for survival horror

But I think having horror elements is needed to keep the tension which is the main point of survival horror.

I think RE gets that because they were the first game to coin the term "Survival Horror "

You're talking about games that are failing at their horror aspects, or at least that they're aging poorly. I'm talking about something that isn't horror at all; hence the Scooby-Doo example. Nobody is going to be scared of Scooby-Doo villains, but it's still a very warped, kid-friendly version of horror.

Resident Evil 6 worked and the only horror involved was how bad it was compared to the rest of the series.

Luigi's Mansion is a perfect example of what I'm talking about.

No, Resident Evil is intentionally goofy.

Maybe the original game didn't intend on the the dialogue being the way it was, but the other stuff is definitely intentional.

The newest title has a character yell "USA! USA! USA!" as he runs away from Umbrella's reach.

Would that make it so goofy games are even closer to true survival games?
