I was curious so I did some digging.

According to https://gamicus.gamepedia.com/List_of_longest_video_game_scripts (take its accuracy as you will), Xenogears lands right around 300k words, which puts it up there but still behind a good many popular games, including:

Trails of Cold Steel (just short of 1,000,000) (Roughly the length of every Harry Potter book combined)
Trails of Cold Steel II (just short of 1,000,000)
Planetscape Torment (950,000)
Dragon Age Origins (740,000) (roughly the length of the Bible)
Trails in the Sky SC (716,000)
Trails in the Sky (Around 700,000)
Trails in the Sky Third (Around 700,000)
Star Wars KotOR (600,000) (Roughly the length of LotR Fellowship, Towers and Return)
Mass Effect 2 (450,000)
Baldur's Gate (434,000) (Roughly the length of The Count of Monte Cristo)
Mass Effect 3 (430,000)
Metal Gear Solid 4 (400,000)
Metal Gear Solid 2 (380,000)
Metal Gear Solid (370,000)
Fable II (370,000)
Final Fantasy VII (344,000)
Persona 3 Portable (340,000)
Shenmue (330,000)
Tales of Vesperia (310,000)

But what I meant was, with five other entries of comparable length, we'd be up to almost 2,000,000 words.

I like Xenogears on how they handled large cities via by map.

it gives a sense that these cities do indeed have thousands of people instead of like 20+ as typical in JRPGs.

That has almost become a lost art.

I can attest to Baldur's Gate; the game has a lot of dialogue and also including all the restored content by the community.

Screen transitions for every single house is borderline unforgivably time-wasting.

Man; I didn't complain about such things back then.

These days people can't even watch a video for just 1 minute on youtube.

A lot of the dialogue being counted in those games is from optional quests. There is only like 1 really major optional quest in Xenogears with dialogue. Then again, I guess they're counting NPC dialogue, and boy can the NPCs in gears fucking talk. Just like Grandia, a lot of them will change what they say after major plot triggers too.

Yeah. Optional dialog is probably bloating most of these pretty substantially. For example, MGS games have hours and hours of the stuff. Probably 40% of any given game's dialog is in optional codec conversations, just like any given JRPG has loads and loads of NPC dialog.

I'm seeing some Xenoblade parallels here

All the Xeno games share Baby's First Nietzsche with Babby's First Bible
