You can also go further into Nortune and compete in mech battles again (you unlocked a higher difficulty and a new mech just for getting to the bottom of Deus)

All right then, thoughts.

The combat is honestly awful. There's one dominant strategy for both of the combat modes and that's all you ever have to use unless there's a gimmick encounter. The encounter rate is an abomination unto mankind. The loading times for going between areas, opening menus, saving, and starting combat all really drag on the exploration experience, in my opinion. I love the aesthetic and exploration when the game isn't copy/pasted labryinthine metal corridors, but that does unfortunately make up a lot of the game. People complain about the second half of the game turning into Cliffnotes, but I was honestly relieved I didn't have to slog through 10 more samey dungeons with outrageous encounter rates.

I can't say the story really captivated me either. So much of it is people you don't know talking about things you don't know in places you've never seen before, and the pronoun game is played way too often. Once the story actually explained itself, I was already just checked out mentally. I hate when games throw around technobabble and lore words because it just makes the conflicts far less relatable and understandable, and Xenogears is guilty of this to an obscene degree. 5 of the 9 party members are almost completely superfluous past their introduction and you don't even get to use them that much regardless. I genuinely don't see how this game is so well liked and reviewed.

I felt your sentiment about the game dragging in disc 1, and I'm torn.

I too kind of wanted to wrap it up, but the story got so good during Shevat and I feel like having disc 2 scenarios fleshed out would have been a lot of worthy payoff for enduring the boring stuff. I mean at that point I was invested enough to endure the crappy gameplay.

I'll eventually get back to playing it and finishing it. Xenoblade made me interested in the other Xeno games purely for Takahashi story-telling, but unfortunately I have no access to the Saga games.

That said, as games, I'll probably end up enjoying the Blade games more, since I hear Xenosaga don't really have good gameplay except for maybe 3.

I played Xenosaga for 10 hours back in the day and I remember more talking than Xenogears and that's saying something. I think I'll give it another crack soon, I liked what I played, just stopped because I got fucked by an encounter after having not saved for an hour.

At the very least I remember it being harder than Gears, but I was a kid when I played it.

I might be hijacking this topic now since I've just started a playthrough myself. I tried it a couple years ago and i think i got to a desert town or something before i went and replayed FFIX instead.

I forgot how janky and annoying the camera is and the forest dungeon looked confusing as hell. Maybe I'll get used to it.

The batte system is quite fun, imo.

Feels very text heavy, which i don't really have an issue with, but damn, people in this game really like to talk.

Even the unimportant NPCs have, like, five or six dialog boxes to get through.

The camera is odd but fortunately it's pretty simple to use, unlike some games with terrible cameras. Weird camera control and/or movement is sort of a trademark of the PS1. It wasn't the advent of 3D gaming, nor of gamepads, but it was the first time the two had really met, so they were trying to figure out/make up the rules as they went.

A lot of the dungeons have complicated design or repetitive areas, so get used to that. Fortunately, it's usually not too bad if you don't psych yourself out and think you've somehow gone in a circle. That very rarely happens. Useful tip, you can get through most of them with a simple strategy of going left (from your character's perspective) at every fork or intersection. This forest happens to be an exception.

The battle systems were more like a lot of neat ideas that they just didn't bother to actually balance. There are a couple of battles where it pays to strategize but as you'll soon learn, you can use deathblows endlessly on foot, which more or less trivializes combat in most cases.

And yeah, all the dialog was another thing I really liked about this game. I love talking to NPCs in any game, and them having so much to say in XG made it a lot more fun.

Protip, learn your TX deathblow before arriving at Dazil (shortly after leaving the forest). Just do Triangle X over and over in battle until you learn it.

Yep, it stays this level of talky for all 70-ish hours. Actually, it gets even more talky pretty frequently. And the absurd thing is this was originally planned to be a six- part series, with this game being only one installment. The credits even call it Xenogears 5.

Basically, it was evidently shooting to set a world record for most dialog in anything ever.

It wasn't far off, it looks like the only games with more are some Metal Gears, Mass Effects, Trails games, and a fuckton of weeb visual novels.
