I'm Maybe a third of the way in... at the part where you escaped into the woods with Ellie. People praise this game so much but it's been a chore to play. Gunplay is clunky, game is absurdly stingy with ammo, movement is slow, and rattlers do a bullshit one hit kill. Story is neat but rest of game isn't fun at all so far.

the gameplay doesn't really change, but I didn't mind, since I enjoyed it.

Just met bill. Bit more action but still super janky. Realistically how long till I can finish it if I rush?

Yeah the gameplay is a bit clunky but I'm used to it for survival horror games. You're supposed to take more of a stealthy approach to conserve supplies. Definitely not for everyone gameplay-wise.

The gameplay doesn't get any better, but it's a little more in-depth than it looks like at first. The fun of it is about staying hidden and managing sound. You shoot a guy, everyone runs to where the gunshot came from, then you molotov the group when they arrive. Or etc. If you've already figured that out but still don't find it fun, then no, the gameplay doesn't get any better.
But the story, characters and cutscenes get way better as it goes. Give it at least until the end of summer (you're probably halfway there). A normal playthrough for me takes about 15 hours so it's not like it's a super time sink if you end up never liking it.
