A lot of people hated it but the roommates of the main character are basically who you watch it for. Nick, Schmidt and Winston are hilarious. Then in season 3/4 when they bring back coach it's pretty much the highest the show ever got.

I think it stayed great through most of its run

Happy Endings was similar and also very good

So true, Happy Endings was great. Sad that it got cancelled, but silver lining was that we got Coach back in new girl

I didn't like the megan fox run and she dragged the show with her wooden acting, but otherwise there were still some great jokes in the later seasons. The addition of nasim pedrad is what really saves it, she was great addition to the cast.

What I do love is how the creator is basically Jess

Feels like the show is based on her or something

The writers had some issues where the show kind of spun it's wheels for awhile and the show suffered for it.

-what to do with Nick/Jess. Great build up. Then too much focus on them. Simultaneously, they essentially wrote off heavily flawed yet loveable Schmidt in favor of evil man baby Schmidt.

-return of Coach. There's a few episodes where they didn't really know what to do with him. Then they really nailed it for a few episodes and he was gone again.

-Winston. They Flanderized him like no other on the show. At one point this dude was the voice of reason. Then he became bird shirt wearing cat lover. Then they started to round him out a little bit more for the last two seasons but it wasn't enough.

There's other issues, but for a show where the first two seasons are so amazing it really lost out on so much potential.

That's the problem with basing your entire show on will they/won't they, the show suffers once that "tension" is gone. It's why better shows have the characters exist outside their romantic subplot, eg Leslie and Ben in Parks and Rec or Jake and Amy in Brooklyn 99, both NBC shows interestingly enough.

I'd say season 4 is peak. After in season 5 that's when the show drops considerably with Coach leaving again and of course plasticface fox is brought in. But nasim pedrad was a silver lining imo

By the end of season 3 they'd finally found a good rhythm with Coach, and by season 4 it was great seeing both Coach and Winston together, even though I'd joke about how there could be like, 5 or 6 people living in one studio apartment with one bathroom. Also it's nice for a show to you know, have more than just the one black/minority character like in all those old sitcoms, but then Coach left and it was like nope back to one hehe.

I do agree about Winston and it's like at the exact moment of season 3 when it happens hehe. But honestly I like him anyway and you could tell they had no idea what to do with the character throughout a lot of the early show's run anyway so that was bound to happen. Was he the straight man, was he the voice of reason, was he the dude who was over competitive and the best at everything, they eventually just settled him into the goofy weirdo and then really doubled down on the bird thing.
