Let me rephrase that. When you actually do get a game with a manual?

And they had them when they really didn't even need them. You don't need an instruction book for a 2D Genesis game, the controller only has 3 buttons.

And the ones that do are bare minimum at best. I still have my SNES manuals and a couple NES ones. The fighting game ones and the old Mario/Zelda ones were awesome.

Actually, in those days you needed them a lot, just for a different reason.

How else were you supposed to know why this robot who can transform into anything imaginable is running around shooting stuff?

Though in practice, we usually ignored them anyway. "Because they're bad guys" was good enough for us.

usually back in the day before voice acting and games having actual storylines. I remember loving the art that was included in the Golden Sun booklets.

The Nintendo games like Mario had pretty much a fullly made booklet explaining the games story and stuff. It was pretty awesome actually.

Manuals for video games were simply a result of them being treated in the same vein as A) board games and B) other computer applications, both of which needed manuals given their limitations to teach the end user.

Believe me, I adored the time when I would read the manual for the video game I just bought in the car ride on the way home, and some of the manuals produced were glorious things unto themselves depending on the game.

But once the realization hit hard that the games themselves could teach the player how to play directly, either through a controller layout image, a tutorial, or cleverly within the game's structure itself, their cost became too great. Printing isn't cheap. Designing isn't cheap.

I would compose a lament for game manuals of the past, but would stop there. They are a joyous throwback, nothing more.

It doesn't take long to read one. If I picked up an old game that came with it, I'd probably skim through for the art or extra lore.

Everytime manuals come up I can't help but mention that FFXII's manual had more development for Penelo than the entire game itself telling us that she was trained to fight by her Knight brothers who aren't mentioned in dozens of hours of gameplay.

I miss them only for reading about the story/characters/etc. But I can see why they don't make them anymore due to in-game tutorials.

It sucks that they're defunct, but they've been irrelevant for years. We don't really need them.

Yes, but I like to see how intuitive the controls are and how long or how well they are introduced after an NG starts.
