I stayed with my dad for a few weeks recently, and he commented about the price of his power bill. It's more than triple what I pay, and his house is not even close to triple the size of mine. Maybe 1.5 times at most.

After that I noticed all these little things that he does to use more electricity, like having a portable AC on in his bedroom all the time (yes, even during freezing winter temps), leaving lights and the TV on over night "for the dog", etc.

He also seems to be against doing things himself. He has a chainsaw and electric hedge trimmer but pays someone to trim his hedge. I told him that I do my own oil and tire changes and he looked at me like I had three heads.

Not necessarily trying to paint him in a bad way, but I do find it interesting that he has more time than money. Ever since I moved out years ago, I've been conscious of utility usage because I didn't always have the money to spare. I also like learning how to do things myself that don't require professional knowledge. He's not rich by any means, but clearly he doesn't need to watch his spending.

That portable AC is the primary culprit. Had to run one when I lived in a condo because the central air unit was over 25 years old and could only do so much. Cut my power bill in half when I moved from a 1000 sqft condo into a 2300 sqft house with a functional 10 year old central air system.

He claims the dog gets anxious if the TV and lights are off when he goes to bed. If the dog needs white noise to stay calm then (besides better training) a radio would be better.

There a ton of people that leave the tv on during the day for the dog while they're at work.
It's dumb.
