I think if someone owns 20 firearms, they would qualify as a gun nut.

What are you going to do if someone breaks into your house? That's just plain negligent.

Tbh
I only consider someone a gun nut if they're constantly advertising the fact that they have guns/like guns. Like, their social media is nothing but pictures of guns/them with guns. Shit like that.

20 is not that many. I would say you're buying too many when you start running out of space in your home adequately store them, or you're spending so much money on them that it's keeping you from paying your bills or saving/investing.

I figure more than around ten. Ten Firearms covers pretty much everything you could possibly for various hunting and home defense scenarios. Supposing you are a collector, I'd say once you reach a point at which you've run out of space.

If the home invader was interested in harming me instead of stealing my things, I would likely have prevailed. You never know what a piece of shit who is breaking into your home actually wants.

I don't understand what point you're trying to make. A POS found a way to open a window, possibly using a pry tool, and snuck inside my house while I was sleeping. It could have turned into a life or death situation very easily. Do you think it's better to have nothing to defend yourself with?

I would say more than 3 per person unless theyre a legitimate non paranoid collector or competitor or something. And even then theyre a little nuts. 1 pistol, 1 shotgun, 1 rifle.
you could very much make a case a for a LOT more than that. guns are not do-alls, like any other item or tool.

This is admittedly based on personal opinion and experience. But Ive known people who are gun nuts who owned no or just one gun(s), so theres that.
If you are avid hunter you need more than that. Various shotgun gauges and different caliber rifles. You don't want to try and hunt small birds with 12 Gauge or duck with 20 gauge. You can, it's just not optimal. Shooting competitions are also a whole different ballgame. I'm still sitting on actual bagful of guns that I inherited from my dad's aunt when she passed away that I haven't even looked at (likely going to sell most of them because they are competition guns and I don't shoot competitively) because they are at my mom's and she has COPD so i'm staying the fuck away from her till Coronavirus dies down.
Generally for the average person though I agree with you. Though I would go with 4. 1 Semi-automatic Handgun, 1 Revolver, 1 Shotgun, 1 rifle.

When you stop respecting the gun in your hand and how you interact with people.

Number of guns is a very small part of being a gun nut.

I don't think you guys have all the bases covered...at bare minimum, you need:

  • 1 18" pump shotgun for home defense
  • 1 short-barreled shotgun for door breaching
  • 1 shotgun with 30" competition barrel, 9-round extended mag tube, and modified loading port for faster reloads
  • 2 budget AR-15 pattern rifles for parts in case of apocalypse
  • 1 AR pistol with no stock, red dot, and suppressor for home defense
  • 1 AR with magnified optic for compound perimeter defense
  • 1 AR chambered in something like .450 Bushmaster in case you have to leave town for a restricted state
  • 1 9mm submachine gun supressor host with pistol brace for home defense
  • 1 .22LR scoped rifle for varmint/small game hunting and teaching your kids to shoot in apocalypse
  • 1 scoped hunting rifle in any caliber for large game hunting in apocalypse
  • 1 scoped rifle in .50 BMG, 45-70 Government, or equivalent caliber for destroying engine blocks of armed raiders, vigilantes, or rogue government assassin squads in apocalypse
  • 1 pistol in each of the common calibers for ammo scavenging in apocalypse
  • 1 suppressed .22LR pistol for home defense

Really and truly a gun nut is someone who owns a shit ton of tactical gear and weapons, broadcasts that fact, constantly talks about politics, and talks about offing certain politicians. Someone simply owning weapons, in any quantity, does not qualify them as a nut.

Fuckin rimfire for home defense? Silenced .22 pistols jam all of the Time. Why not just have a .45 acp or 9mm with subsonic? They aren't much louder than a .22.
