That a thing? I see what looks like a wasp flying around the bushes and trees, but it's all black, not striped. I want to get a photo to ID it but it never lands long enough for me to even get a clear look at it.

Yeah we have some where I live that are really dark blue, but they look black when they're flying around.

Huh they look similar to wasps with the stretched abdomen, now I'm unsure of which it could be.

Great Black Wasp

Hmm maybe.

Here's the thing, a few months ago we had grasshoppers all over and what I've noticed is these wasps... I don't even know how to describe it. They sting (I assume) the grasshopper and then move around with it. Like the black wasp thing is on top of the grasshopper (who I can't imagine is still alive) and kind of puppets it around. It was the most terrifying thing I'd ever seen as it looked straight out of a horror movie or re4. I don't even understand what it was doing or why.

Might have been laying eggs inside it. Some types of wasps do that. Then the babies eat their way out.

This. Or a cricket hunter.

Edit: did it have orange wings? What region of the country do you live in? I ask because I used to want to be an entomologist growing up and I studied Vespids and Saturniid moths mostly.

If it has orange wings, it's a tarantula hawk which has one of if not the most painful sting in the world.

Oh lord I hadn't thought of that. It seems like a pretty likely explanation for it.

Sphecius Speciosis, aka Cicada Killer. Just like the Tarantula Hawk, you only have to watch out for the females (males can't sting). And the good news about Tarantula Hawks is they won't bother you if you don't bother them. Most solitary wasps are much more concerned about foraging for food or materials for nests. You're really not even there to them unless you try to kill them or mess with them.

This is why I asked if it was blueish. There are a lot of these where I live (they somehow get into my house and then fly to my door wanting out all the time lol) and like you said they aren't very aggressive. I've been stung by one once and it barely even registered as pain

Next time if I see one I'll check if they're more blueish than jet-black. As a rule of thumb I tend to ignore/leave those insects alone when they buzz about so I don't register on their radar.

What's the point of being this skinny? It would be super easy for them to accidentally break in half.

Most of the wasps where I am are "black". I guess it's actually a really dark brown though. Just a solid dark color.
