My gf has been mentioning about how she misses playing it, but it changed or whatever. She straight up likes the 2D/side scrolling part of it, but Im willing to tell her any recommendations you guys got.

If she's into the side scrolling hack and slash-ness, the only stuff that comes to mind are things like metroidvanias (Guacamelee, Bloodstained, Castlevania games)

There's Soul Saver Online (formerly Ghost Online), I played that back in the day as an alternative to maplestory, it's basically a maplestory clone (has the same look and feel and stuff) but I liked it better since all the classes get like a run and superjump so moving around the maps is sooo much better. Haven't played it recently but it's one of the few mmos I think of when I try to recall old games I used to play all the time
