Sometimes I think about rock music from like 10-15 years ago and I wonder how an entire genre just basically fell off the face of the Earth.

I cant imagine unironically listening to new rock music in the year 2020... I couldnt take it seriously.

In America it seems like Hip-Hop has completely taken over and dominated the culture for a while now.

Early 2000s rock indeed was abrasive and unlistenable dross. Rock's golden era started in the mid 1960s and entered its decline in the late 90s.

That was six years ago. This is them two years ago debuting their second album which is also a concept album, making them possibly the youngest band in history to do so. They were 13, 16, and 18 at the time.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=TeIbG8nkOiU

Well I swear the whole performance used to be on their channel as one video but now it is apparently broken up by individual songs. Still, there are other concerts they have up as well as all the fan uploads. They become more popular by the year and are essentially the future of rock and its only a matter of time before they become THE band to listen to of the genre.

Funny that you mention drip paintings because I saw someone on Facebook do one and it went viral and I immediately thought about Jackson Pollock and how that wasnt an original idea.

rock was always bad

its just one of those genres where poor sound quality masks a lot of the badness

as music production has improved over the years everyone started to realise it was shit

Wow, I didn't know rock was recorded with 1940s sound equipment until the turn of the millenium.

Again, Im not taking about quality, Im talking about popularity.

I could name like 30 rock bands from 15 years ago but I literally could not name a single rock band that is active or relevant in 2020.

I watched like half of the first video and it does a pretty good job of explaining why rock is dead in 2020.

Entire festivals are filled with ancient bands from the 70s, 80s and 90s and they dont promote any new talent.

This guy often falls into the fault of revisionist history but also as someone who's worked with countless bands from selling at the merch table to booking tours and managing renowned producers, he does know a lot about the business side of music and why things work the way they do.

There's still some good metal out there, but straight rock got pushed out of the mainstream because there was nowhere to go from mid 00s post grunge. Emo/screamo was a dead end genre, pop punk didn't have anywhere to go, and the rock genre as a whole became entirely about hooks and the best 5 second clip for athletic montages. That's pretty boring, imo.
