Based it off the 2018 seeding with the Elite Eight thrown back in. I saw somebody mention the idea of throwing in 16 non video game characters at different seeds to get our feet wet. An idea I personally loved so I stuck to it and limited it two 2 of them per division. I tried to only knock out characters that were either low seeded in 2018 or I felt like people wouldn't care about as much now. I also put in Banjo, Terry Bogard, Byleth, Red XIII, Tom Nook, Dracula, and Arthur Morgan due to Smash DLC hype, recent game hype, and Alucard's The Plan hype.

Anyway here's the bracket

Round 1

Division 1
(1) Batman
(8) Magus (always appreciate a good nod at our past)
(5) Yoshi
(4) Alucard
(3) Kirby
(11) KOS-MOS
(7) Banjo
(2) Sephiroth

Division 2
(1) Sonic the Hedgehog
(8) Aerith
(5) Bowser
(4) Ganondorf
(3) Tifa Lockhart
(6) Shulk
(7) Aloy (I actually find this to be a compelling 1 point match)
(2) Squall Leonhart

Division 3
(1) Cloud Strife
(8) Luke Skywalker
(5) Byleth
(4) Leon Kennedy
(3) Darth Vader
(6) Terra Branford
(7) Yuna
(2) 2B

Division 4
(1) Solid Snake
(8) Tidus (man, this is straight deja vu)
(12) Homer Simpson
(4) Zelda
(3) Joker (this set up is genius)
(6) The Joker
(7) GlaDOS
(2) Crono

Division 5
(1) Link
(9) Ike
(12) Fox McCloud
(4) Goku
(3) Kratos
(11) Red XIII (should have given him a 13 seed)
(10) Frog
(2) Zero

Division 6
(1) Mega Man
(8) Shovel Knight
(12) Scorpion
(13) Charizard
(3) Mega Man X
(6) Pikachu
(7) Amaterasu
(2) Spider-Man

Divison 7
(1) Mario
(8) Zidane Tribal
(5) Big Boss
(4) Vivi
(3) Dante
(11) Donkey Kong
(7) Wolverine
(2) Geralt

Division 8
(1) Samus (I think Yu and Chloe should trade spots. I don't think Yu would take Amaterasu, but he's got a better shot than 2nd to last place Chloe, who would be better 16 seed material anyway)
(9) Vegeta
(5) Bayonetta
(4) Ryu
(3) Auron
(6) Jill Valentine
(7) Kefka
(2) Luigi

Round 2

Division 1
(1) Batman
(5) Yoshi
(3) Kirby
(2) Sephiroth

Division 2
(1) Sonic the Hedgehog
(5) Bowser (pending Breath of the Wild 2 using a more prominent Ganondorf, but I will be happy to take a Bowser upset special when available)
(3) Tifa Lockhart
(2) Squall Leonhart

Division 3
(1) Cloud Strife
(4) Leon Kennedy
(3) Darth Vader
(2) 2B

Division 4
(1) Solid Snake
(4) Zelda
(3) Joker (I'll bite on this one, Persona Joker will not be the same guy we saw with the wrong name losing to Claire)
(2) Crono

Division 5
(1) Link
(4) Goku
(3) Kratos
(2) Zero

Division 6
(1) Mega Man
(13) Charizard
(6) Pikachu
(2) Spider-Man

Divison 7
(1) Mario
(4) Vivi
(3) Dante (I do want to pull the trigger on DK, but then again DMC did shock us all* with 5 beating Tropical Freeze)
(2) Geralt

Division 8
(1) Samus
(4) Ryu
(3) Auron
(2) Luigi

Round 3

Division 1
(5) Yoshi (I mean, if you want to start taking upset specials on the fictional characters being duds or voters turning on them, this is a great set up)
(2) Sephiroth

Division 2
(1) Sonic the Hedgehog (I mean, pitting our strongest non-Noble 9ers against Sonic is always a good thing to try. I approve of this Division 2 set up now that I see it unfold)
(3) Tifa Lockhart

Division 3
(1) Cloud Strife
(3) Darth Vader

Division 4
(4) Zelda
(2) Crono

Division 5
(1) Link
(2) Zero

Division 6
(1) Mega Man
(6) Pikachu

Divison 7
(1) Mario
(2) Geralt

Division 8
(1) Samus
(2) Luigi

Division Finals

Division 1
(2) Sephiroth

Division 2
(3) Tifa Lockhart

Division 3
(1) Cloud Strife

Division 4
(4) Zelda

Division 5
(1) Link

Division 6
(1) Mega Man

Divison 7
(1) Mario

Division 8
(1) Samus

Quarterfinals

(2) Sephiroth (FF7 Remake is going to be a bit of a game changer. I think it might help Sephiroth reclaim his spot in the hierarchy even though the whole cast benefits.)

(1) Cloud Strife (Zelda won't have quite the bandwagon this time around, which is what helped her run through winner's bracket. She's still an elite tier, but maybe towards the lower end. Also depends on where we are with FF7 Remake vs. BotW 2.)

(1) Link

(1) Samus (Keeping this one, though. If there's any activity in the Metroid series, it will only help Samus. Meanwhile, Odyssey came and went and Mario still almost lost, which is why I thought Odyssey > Smash was a little wild.)

Semi-finals

(1) Cloud Strife

(1) Link

WINNER

(1) Link (FF7Remake's remaining parts would all have to live up to the hype enormously to change the tides here, while Nintendo would need to fuck up the Switch's successor and BotW2 to have a chance at ever losing a non-rally match again)

My predictions, with bold for matches I'd expect to be within 55-45 or so:

(1) Batman - I approve of this initial match; certainly, all the B8ers who'd be taking fictional characters to do great things in this bracket would be panicking upon seeing Batman miss 60% against a 16-seed as the overall 1-seed.
(9) Knuckles - I'm not sure why we need to snap Knuckles' streak of beating unique Square characters just to have an utterly predictable rematch, though.
(5) Yoshi
(4) Alucard - Nice to see Isaac get a hypothetical chance to prove a thing or two about that Kirby match.
(3) Kirby - Why bother assuming Chunners can even make the bracket again if you're just going to feed her to Kirby even though she'd have a fighting chance against multiple other 3-seeds? You might just as well have M. Bison, the hopeful winner of the next NRT, in her place at that point.
(11) KOS-MOS - Honestly, Master Chief probably wins if we roll with face shots again, but it just feels right to pick KOS-MOS here.
(7) Banjo - Perfect place to prove my theory that Banjo has decent strength now, but has never had a chance to show it thanks to always running into Nintendo.
(2) Sephiroth

(1) Sonic the Hedgehog
(8) Aerith - This is kind of a ridiculous first-round match and fourpack in general. Why not just pay tribute to the early contests by making Aerith an 11-seed in a position to reach the third round again?
(5) Bowser
(4) Ganondorf - It feels like a waste to stick Pac-Man against another old-school Nintendo icon.
(3) Tifa Lockhart - I could see Kratos or even Darth Vader versus Ryu H being interesting, though.
(6) Shulk - I don't get the impression Simba in particular is very well-liked at all, at least in 'nerdy' circles such as GameFAQs. Scar would be a better choice if pure contest strength is the goal.
(7) Aloy
(2) Squall Leonhart - That Amaterasu match should have been Draven's last.

(1) Cloud Strife
(8) Luke Skywalker - Why would you go with Luke over Han, though?
(12) Garrus
(4) Leon Kennedy - I could see Ridley winning this back in 2018, but now the shine of Ridley in Smash has worn off, and RE2make will keep Leon relevant a bit longer.
(3) Darth Vader
(6) Terra Branford - Pre-MK11, I'd have said whoever thought they knew who would win this was lying. Post-MK11, I largely expect Sub-Zero to go the way of post-SFV Ryu and settle for a respectable loss here.
(10) Dracula
(2) 2B

(1) Solid Snake
(8) Tidus - Now this is an actual quality rematch.
(12) Homer Simpson - Drake isn't actually that weak; it's just that he and his games keep getting overseeded.
(4) Zelda
(14) Wario
(6) The Joker
(10) Captain Toad - I fully expect another Toad labeling boondoggle to unfairly screw GLaDOS over here.
(2) Crono

(1) Link
(9) Ike
(12) Fox McCloud - What a waste of Phoenix, though. Phoenix versus Cecil and Goku versus Fox would be two great first-round matches, even if the latter could be considered a bit high-wattage.
(4) Goku
(3) Kratos
(11) Red XIII
(10) Frog
(2) Zero

(1) Mega Man
(8) Shovel Knight
(5) James Bond
(13) Charizard
(3) Mega Man X - And here I thought Chun-Li and Ryu H were wasted...
(6) Pikachu
(7) Amaterasu
(2) Spider-Man

(1) Mario
(9) Lara Croft - I'm not sure why Lara would suddenly plunge from a 4-seed to a 9-seed or why Zidane would substantially improve his relative seed.
(5) Big Boss
(4) Vivi
(3) Dante - Believe it or not, it's possible to care about neither of the characters in this fun little set-up. I know because I don't, and bracket votes from people like me would give Dante this match.
(11) Donkey Kong
(7) Wolverine
(2) Geralt

(1) Samus
(9) Vegeta
(5) Bayonetta
(4) Ryu - Poor Ramza...
(3) Auron
(6) Jill Valentine
(7) Kefka
(2) Luigi

---

(1) Batman
(5) Yoshi - The Netflix Castlevania series isn't getting any younger, and there's no longer any Smash hype to vote on, so I'm inclined to think Alucard's already past his peak.
(3) Kirby
(2) Sephiroth

(1) Sonic the Hedgehog
(5) Bowser - If BotW 2 and its promised bigger role for Ganon comes out before this hypothetical match, though, forget it.
(3) Tifa Lockhart
(2) Squall Leonhart

(1) Cloud Strife
(4) Leon Kennedy
(3) Darth Vader
(2) 2B - When in doubt, take the character who can pull off a hentai rally.

(1) Solid Snake
(4) Zelda
(6) The Joker
(2) Crono

(1) Link - Was there really too little space to pit Ike against someone who wouldn't SFF him into the ground?
(12) Fox McCloud - Goku 'should' be stronger, but my gut's practically screaming at me to pick Fox here.
(3) Kratos
(2) Zero

(1) Mega Man - Why was this pointless SFFfest necessary to set up again?
(13) Charizard
(6) Pikachu - And here I thought Mewtwo was wasted last round...
(2) Spider-Man

(1) Mario
(4) Vivi
(3) Dante
(2) Geralt

(1) Samus
(4) Ryu - I want to believe Ryu's rebounded a bit from his 2018 catastrophe, but who really knows?
(3) Auron
(2) Luigi

---

(5) Yoshi
(2) Sephiroth - Kirby lost this match fairly handily in the year of FF7's nadir, in a format that should have been perfectly suited for him, with just about the worst possible third wheel for Sephy besides Cloud or Snake at the time. I'm not convinced this would even be particularly close in neutral circumstances.

(5) Bowser - This is probably a bridge too far, but screw it, I'm willing to burn my hypothetical bracket on the pyre that is my Bowser fandom.
(3) Tifa Lockhart

(1) Cloud Strife
(3) Darth Vader - However, I don't think this match will quite be close enough for rallies to swing it, unless the STC crowd gets involved I guess.

(1) Solid Snake - If this match were happening today, in neutral circumstances, I'd probably take Snake. After BotW 2, however, he won't have a chance.
(2) Crono

(1) Link
(2) Zero

(1) Mega Man
(6) Pikachu

(1) Mario - Well, it's a worthwhile setup, at least.
(2) Geralt

(1) Samus
(2) Luigi

---

(2) Sephiroth
(3) Tifa Lockhart
(1) Cloud Strife
(1) Solid Snake
(1) Link
(1) Mega Man - Pikachu only won the first time because some casual voters weren't voting due to the break. Even if there's another break between Rounds 3 and 4 in this hypothetical contest, Pikachu loses if you assume recent Pokmon disappointments even slightly impact its strength.
(1) Mario
(1) Samus

---

(3) Tifa Lockhart - Even if Sephiroth was the stronger character, you better believe some otherwise neutral Nintendo fans would be hopping mad after watching him impale fan favorites Kirby and Yoshi in succession. Plus, I'm inclined to think FF7R actually benefits Tifa more based on what I've heard and because some voters have already permanently soured on Sephiroth.
(1) Cloud Strife
(1) Link
(1) Mario - Right now, I feel ok about siding with Mario here. Once Metroid Prime 4 reaches its hype phase, though, forget it.

(1) Cloud Strife
(1) Link

(1) Link

Overall, this is a decent bracket, but I think it's hampered quite a bit by your insistence on preventing an all-Nintendo final match. If you're going to have Link in a bracket, which I unfortunately think an all-fictional main bracket scenario forces, at least put all the other strongest characters on the opposite side of the field to minimize the amount of wasted matches.

Also, I'm generally not fond of the idea of sticking exactly 16 fictional characters into a regular character battle field. That leaves us with all the downsides of an all-in fictional field, particularly all the anticlimactic Link stomps, without the upside of having a bunch of unpredictable entrants. I guess there's some regular characters who get to shine this way, but is it really worth it? Oh, and I know this is kind of a nitpick, but it's a shame there's no strong non-male candidates for the licensed top 16.

Is it that predictable? I mean, they landed really close to each other in the 2018 stats, with Magus taking the lead depending on which value for Sonic you think is more accurate (thanks double elimination bracket). Plus, it's the first day of the contest assuming four matches a day, so you'll be missing some casual votes. And while brackets will probably be for Knux, I think the board would probably go crazy for a Magus win, so a close match would be Magus's to lose.

Thanks for the feedback first everyone. I'll try to hit on all the points that were mentioned. I saw these two close together in the x-stats, with Magus on top surprisingly, and saw a chance to give a shout out to Board 8. Didn't put the Knuckles beating Square thing into consideration but I'd have no problem messing with the seeding and giving Knuckles a shot at either Vivi or Terra. Probably my biggest internal complaint with myself was the 14 seeds and how I felt like I didn't use most of them properly. I love M. Bison and support just having him replace Chun-Li. I also originally had Squall and Sephiroth switched but I felt that left Division 1 a little too weak, which makes me think I could've just switched Tifa and Kirby, to set up Batman/Yoshi/Alucard vs. Tifa/Sephiroth.

Division 2 was set up to push Sonic to his limit as he is perceived as the weakest NNiner. I agree the Aerith/Red match actually seems like a waste in that slot in hindsight, Switching it with the Aloy/Monika though could make it more interesting maybe. I wanted to put Pac-Man up against a non video game character originally because I thought he'd be the perfect test for one. I went with Simba because in those Board 8 "How well would they do in a contest" topics he is ranked ahead of Scar. Same reason why I chose Luke Skywalker over Han Solo.

I love the idea of switching Cecil and Fox that way you get 2 great 1st round matches instead of 1 grear 2nd round match. Also putting Hayabusa against Kratos makes that match debatable, I also don't see Harry Potter doing that much since this site might be too old for him. Red XIII not being a 13 seed does seem like a shame though. Also if we once again switch Aloy/Monika to be the 8/9 in this division with Shepard/Ike then we can watch Link destroy more fodder and avoid SFFing Ike to the ground.

Division 6 was probably my least favorite division before settling on the bracket. I had Chloe as a 10 seed because I assume board 8 will end up getting her overseeded but Yu is one of my favorite characters so I'd gladly switch him with Chloe. An easy fix for Mewtwo's placement could be switching him with Scorpion, especially with MK11 looking so weak in GOTD2. Pikachu/MMX may seem like a waste for MMX but they are close in the x-stats and I don't see MMX losing strength while Pikachu has a chance to have dropped some.

I feel like Lara Croft is slowly losing her newfound popularity from the 2013 Tomb Raider, she was technically an 8 seed and Zidane the 9 seed but I switched it to give Zidane a little help. Ramza and Tails both could've gotten better less predictable matchups I felt but I just kinda ran out of ideas.

I actually wasn't avoiding the all Nintendo Finals on purpose, it just fell that way with Cloud and Link on opposite sides. You could switch the Cloud/Snake divisions with the Samus/Mario divisions and I feel like that would be good as well.

Is it that predictable?
I think it would be the most obvious 51-49 match ever, though maybe I'm just overcorrecting after 2018's Knuckles > Zidane affair. It doesn't help that Knuckles would likely have 80%+ of B8 brackets thanks to Magus's (somewhat unfair by now) reputation, and it seems like we actually prefer Knuckles to Magus now. I could see Terra/Knuckles being interesting, though Vivi/Knuckles would be a bridge too far both in terms of seeding and the Square character's strength.

Yeah, I feel like your proposed three-way switch of the Aerith, Aloy, and Ike matches would work much better. The only problems I can think of with that are that post-FF7R Aerith would be a bit too obvious a winner of the resulting fourpack (though I'm really curious to see what would happen in a Tifa/Aerith match), and I'm struggling to see how either Aerith or Red would score a 7-seed.

Oh, that's a bit awkward since I'm actually one of the three regular participants in that series. Honestly, we rated Simba so long ago that I forget what I thought at the time, but at the very least, I'm pretty confident in Scar > Simba and Han > Luke now.

TAFKAHurricane posted...
Pikachu/MMX may seem like a waste for MMX but they are close in the x-stats and I don't see MMX losing strength while Pikachu has a chance to have dropped some.
My major problem with that match is that it's forcing one of two borderline top 10 characters to lose in the second round; I could easily see it being worthwhile a round or two later if Pikachu's dropped at all. Actually, Snake/Zelda has the same problem with both being borderline top 5 characters and one having to lose in only the third round.

Regarding the finals, point taken, and I guess I should have realized that with Zelda being in the front half and all. I still feel like we'd have more compelling matches with Mario, Samus, Cloud, and probably Snake/Zelda all on the opposite side of Link, even if 2018 already had a majority of those matches, but I'm sure there's others who think that skew wouldn't be worth it.

I'm going to bump this, because I thought of the Joker four-pack while playing XenoblaDE, and I wanted to make it better.
