Apple: Recover 50 HP
Orange: Recover 100 HP
Cucumber: Recover 50 MP
Tomato: Recover 100 MP

This is WRONG! Total CRAP!

How is the player supposed to know whether an apple is better than an orange, or which stat a tomato affects?

This is better, if you must go with food:

Apple: Recover 50 HP
Steak: Recover 100 HP
Mint: Recover 50 MP
Cocoa Powder: Recover 100 MP

Using a snack vs a meal provides a clear indication that one has more substance than another, while using a spice indicates that by the same logic, no HP should be recovered. But there's still the question of how one ranks the effectiveness of one spice against another.

But this is better still. Do this:

First Aid Kit: Recover 50 HP
Field Surgeon's Kit: Recover 100 HP
Vial of Mana: Recover 50 MP
Jug of Mana: Recover 100 MP

No confusion there whatsoever.

Or play a well-designed game with decent affordances.

I like how EarthBound does it.

Food tends to replenish HP and drinks tend to replenish PP. And typically the larger or more decadent the food, the more effective. Additionally items like the Large Pizza will, understandably, effect the entire party.

So, every game should gave the same "HP restore" and "MP restore" nomenclature?

This birngs to mind how silly it is that food is healing item in Fallout 3, and providing a measly 5-10 HP no less. Even with low medicine skill a stimpak grants 50 HP, and stimpaks are plentiful. Moreover, stimpaks are weightless, further negating the usefulness of food items. It's also somewhat amusing to imagine the Lone Wanderer chowing down ten boxes of 200-year old deviled eggs in quick succession, with no ill effects whatsoever, to heal flamethrower-inflicted burns.
