State health officials reported 58 new deaths related to the coronavirus and 1,448 new cases Thursday, the highest single-day increase for both numbers.

The record number of fatalities brings the statewide death toll from the coronavirus to 1,216, according to the latest data from the Texas Department of State Health Services. The previous high was 50 new deaths on April 30.

The new cases Thursday marked the seventh day in a row that Texas saw more than 1,000 COVID-19 cases in a single day, bringing the total number of known cases to 43,851. There are 18,148 active cases of the coronavirus, the health agency reported.

The increase in positive cases comes as COVID-19 testing ramps up across the state.

Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday ordered testing for all nursing home residents and employees across the state. State health officials also are working to test all employees in some meatpacking plants in the Panhandle.

On Thursday, the health agency reported 35,853 new tests, the second highest increase in tests in a single day. The state set a record one day prior, when health officials reported 49,259 new tests.

Abbott often points to the states steady hospitalization and infection rates as one indication that certain businesses can begin to reopen. That figure was 4% on Thursday, or 1,448 positive cases out of 35,853 tests, and more than 1,600 COVID-19 patients were in Texas hospitals.

On May 1, the governor allowed restaurants, retailers, movie theaters and malls in most counties to reopen with 25% occupancy. As of last week, barber shops and salons could reopen with distancing and hygiene requirements.

Gyms and other exercise facilities can reopen Monday.

I made a topic about this almost a week ago. Everything went up drastically for Texas 2 weeks after they opened up. That's what happens when you open up without having it under control.

In April they had 3 days where they had 1,000 new infections, they've had 6 times that in May already.

Testing has gone up exponentially in Texas in May. More tests = more confirmed cases. That doesn't make for a clickbait headline though.

Actually, the number of new cases per day dropped during the drastic increase in testing counts. I've already explained this to you twice. Testing went up drastically in April, not May.

Edit: It's more acurate to say that while the number of tests in Texas drastically increased, the trend of increased testing did not correlate positively with the change in the trend of new cases per day.

In Texas, testing started ramping up in April, but the number of new cases per day actually went down because of the shutdown.

58 covid deaths - 8 would be suicides + 4 vehicular deaths - 10 would be stress related deaths + 1 shopping mall brawl death - ...

But the feeling of freedom- priceless
