It went from a typical family sitcom to a sci-fi comedy starring Urkel and Carl. I remember it changing networks for its last season.

I can't figure out why this show is somehow omitted from the 90s kid nostalgia train of contemporary media.

I was 6 in 1990. I grew up in the 90s. I'm from the middle of nowhere West Virginia. But I loved this show. Yet, it felt like after TBS stopped show reruns, it never was on TV again. I miss it!

There's a lot of sitcoms out there, but none had a Steve Urkel past or present. Easy to see why the show ran away with him.

One of my favorite family moments was when Carl confronted those two cops in the coffee shop that harassed Eddie. Family Matters was head of its time for some of its themes especially that one on rogue cops.

I remember how the show had a different mom for the last 3 or 4 episodes. Like why bother recasting then? If the original actress had enough just write the character off. They did that with the youngest daughter.

I feel like it weirdly experienced its nostalgia in the media earlier than other 90s franchises? Like people were talking Urkel up a lot in like the late 2000s and I think it just became oversaturated now that 90s nostalgia is in full effect

I don't know why, but Fresh Prince is on Netflix pretty much everywhere but America. I think its going to be on HBO Max, weirdly, of all places in America.

Celebs are quirky that way, though. If I recall correctly, the lead singer of A Flock of Seagulls hates being asked to play I Ran (so far away). Bruh, thats the song that made your band and the one everyone knows. Shut up and own it.

I liked it better before it turned into the sci-fi adventures of Urkel in the last couple of seasons. They had some quirky stuff before that but they just went way over the top in some instances. My limit was the Stefan Urkel arc and appearances. The time traveling, size shrinking, going to outer space, etc was a bit much.

It'll always be one of my favorite shows from my childhood.

That was probably it. It hurts any future roles. Its a fucked up situation because on one hand you played it so well that people associate you with that character, but it also means they refuse to see you as any other character. Alfonso Ribiero had the same issues with Carlton. He didn't hate the character or show, and he did an amazing job in the role, but even to this day he's just known as "Carlton". If you see him in any other movie or role you just see Carlton and that makes it harder fr them to get other roles. When Will Smith or Reginald Johnson walked around they weren't always asked to say some quirky catch phrase, but i bet you Alfonso gets asked to do the dance and Jaleel gets asked to say "DID I DO THAT" everywhere they go.
