No. Joss Whedon has made an ass of himself in recent years, but Buffy felt very organic in its diversity. I know that I never thought of any of the characters on the show as being tokens.

Mostly no, but there were definitely heavy handed parts too, like the ending. But for the most part, it was well written and all the woke things fit with the story, rather than woke stuff being the point of the story.

We live in a world where a piece of fiction can be viewed negatively based solely on it having a strong female character or one particular male side character often being rescued by said female character.

Absolutely.
The show had very strong themes of feminism and homosexuality as well as masculinity being bad (what we would now call Toxic masculinity) It was all about empowering women and balancing the unequalness of society. The entire show was pretty much a metaphor for just that. The guys saying no are just making excuses because they watched it as kids. Angel/Buffy were as "SJW" as any show being complained about today. Doesn't mean it was bad mind, just SJW. AmericaTheBrave posted... There were no black people in its cast so no.
