Did it?

I found TLJ to be boring and the worst SW movie but I've never agreed that it ruined Luke's character and honestly his characterization makes a lot of sense imo.

Though I never agreed with the Fandom wanting Luke to be a Gary Stu who was flawless or was some all powerful Force God or whatever the fuck happened in the EU.

while maybe he's not perfect, I don't think he would do what he did in the movie.

he believed in his father's ability to redeem himself even after all that Darth Vader did. why would he even think for one millisecond to have no hope for his nephew, when he hadn't even done anything evil yet?

It's not the complete assassination some people claim but it is quite a departure from his attitude in the original trilogy. Add that TFA was all about finding Luke like he was some kind of messiah and you get some whiplash.

Nah

I mean, if you gave up on the film at the wrong time, sure, but if you stuck through it, it's a pretty standard try->fail->retire->accept->grow->overcome arc, which is actually pretty satisfying.

The movie had a lot of problems but this really wasn't one of them.

No because I'm not going to let the movie have a lasting effect on me.

Basically if I ever watch Star Wars movies again, it will be the OT

Seems like this is where the backlash comes from. "It didn't do what my non-canon side stories did."

Yes and no.

It's not the fact that he failed. It is why he failed that really bothers people.

Nah, it was fine. I like my flawed heroes. It didn't ruin him, and he redeemed himself anyway.

Yeah but how many times did he try to kill Vader in episode 6, only to have Darth Dumbass stop him? "IMMA KILL YOU VADER!" "YES! DO THIS AND BECOME EEEEVIL MWAHAHA!" "OH YEAH I FORGOT KILLING PEOPLE IS BAD."

He doesn't even go that far for Ben. If anything, drawing the saber then immediately changing his mind without the need for some villain hell-bent on failure talking him out of it shows he has actually grown as a character.
