Something they actually created and put in the game, or just an exploit that dedicated gamers found and based an entire metagame on? From what I know EV/IV hidden stats existed as far back as gold/silver/crystal so just curious

No, it's just a virus from the digimon world that has infected every Pokemon game.

It was to further 2 things: that each pokemon is different, even if it's the same breed,
and that trained pokemon were stronger than freshly-caught pokemon

But the fact that you could... increase the speed stat specifically, or attack stat specifically, instead of whatever the game decided for you? Without needing to eat up those poke vitamins? Was that something they had in mind?

I found out about the EV/IV thing in gen 3 just as I was getting out of playing pokemon and that mechanic definitely pushed me away further from the series since I never understood how it worked, like at all.

I'm pretty sure Masuda has said that the earlier games weren't made with competition in mind and that's why everything is so lopsided balance wise. Dont quote me on that though.

Doubtful. It can't not be made for battle since Pokemon Stadium 2 existed and considering the game outright cheats, even if you had type advantage it still wasn't enough.

But personally I was always someone who preferred the collecting aspect of Pokemon more so than the battle aspect, which was a big reason for why gen 3 lost me (all that work getting all 250 Pokemon went down the drain, hundreds of hours)
