I was taught that one cannot begin a sentence in that way. Is it true? Why or why not?

Of course it can. It's taught in schools as wrong so you answer questions properly and write more to practice handwriting.

There are instances where it's fine, but teaching the nuance of that to kids is too difficult for teachers.

This is correct:
Because of the coronovirus, we were under quarantine.

Yeah, elementary school teachers are too lazy to teach the nuance of it. Or perhaps the children are too stupid to be worth attempting

I wouldnt be surprised if the children are too young to understand the nuance. Its not necessarily stupidity though.

This ends the topic right here. When there is a causal relationship being mentioned, its perfectly fine to start the sentence with because.

It has to do more with dependent clauses and subordinate conjunctions.

yeah but the sentence needs to be paired with an independent clause otherwise it won't count as an actual sentence/statement. it's fine in conversation because 9 times out of 10 both or all parties know what that independent clause is.

like "hey why didn't you go to the park with us?" "because it's cold outside" is fine in conversation but writing "because it's cold outside" w/o any other information would be a fragment and it would need to be "because it's cold outside, i didn't go to the park" - these can go in any order "i didn't go to the park because it's cold outside"

Technically it can, but most of the time it will be grammatically incorrect because it often is lacking a subject or verb.

The idea is to stop people from answering "Why ____" with "Because ____", since that is actually incorrect. "Because" introduces a dependent clause, but a dependent clause by itself is a sentence fragment.

On the other hand, if you pair the dependent clause with an independent clause, making it a complex sentence, you can still start a sentence with because. For example, you could say "Because they were on sale, I bought seven T-shirts at the store."

That's because it's the same as

"We were under quarantine because of the coronovirus.",

which is a complete sentence, just in a different order. But being asked, and just replying

"Because of the coronovirus."

is an incomplete answer. They want you to write the whole thing.
