Shit, it looks like he's half asleep here, and barely opening his mouth for vox. Yet, it's so fucking resonate. You really can't teach greatness.

You absolutely can teach greatness. The best opera singers in the world didn't wake up and blast a perfect high C their first try.

But Layne was really good, I agree. I'm not sure what his natural tessitura was, but that B natural always sounded very casual and easy for him. Fantastic diaphragmatic support.

True, but natural ability dictates how high you can go. They already had natural talent, and training helped to bring it out. I was under the impression that Staley had no training whatsoever, and that it was all natural to him.

Not to mention, if I recall The Evil Exs didactic lectures correctly, singing in certain ways for a very long time can damage ones vocal cords.

The Evil Ex had/has, as they say, a good set of pipes. Of course, her inordinate fondness for pipes, and the laying thereof was one reason we were fated to part on poor terms.

It doesn't though... range can easily be taught. It's just understanding the mechanisms involved and learning about the different passagio and transitions of the voice.

But I understand what you're saying. He had natural talent.

This is also a good breakdown on how he did what he did.

It didn't sound very powerful to me. Pretty strained for the most part. And he does the Chad Kroeger grumble thing to extend his notes. He was easily the weakest of the big 4 grunge vocalists.

Who were the Big 4?

I suspect that Kurt Cobain and Pearl Jam Man would be in there. Who is the third? The Soundgarden fellow who took his own life a few years ago (may he find peace)?
