Board 8 > Higurashi ch8 question (part-way spoilers)

I just got to the connecting fragments part and I don't understand what I am supposed to be doing, like even on a basic level. I picked the first one I saw that said "this is required first" because I thought I was supposed to "start" with it. I found a guide of which ones go in which order but I'm not ready to cheat and it's implied that I'm supposed to "collect" them before I do anything. I am dumb please help
