The area that I think should be moderated more harshly are snarky, unhelpful posts on game boards.

You get stuck and need someone to explain what to do. You establish that you read the guide, but didnt understand what it meant. Then after posting, the first several responses are simply somebody posting a link to the walkthrough page.

Game boards are here for game help. Theyre so you can ask questions and receive help. Posting a link to the walkthrough page when someone asks for advice should be an instant thirty day suspension.

The site obviously needs harsher modding, but they would also need to get rid of some of the mods and screen new ones better.

I think Allen and the rest just gave up and want the trolls and other bad cases to keep the site numbers up so they can look good to their bosses.

Are the trolling rules relaxed? I feel like, adjusted for modern sensibilities, the trolling rules are enforced just the same now as they were in 2001. If anything, they're better at moderating trolling that occurs over multiple posts. There are a few users who skirt the boundaries too well, but I think eventually they may face consequences that they never would have in the past. I think this is because mods are a lot better (or more able to) read context and implications than just the text of a post.
Flaming is a bit worse, but not far from where I'd like it to be.

They should be more transparent about how things like names of certain sites, emulators, or romhacks.
Users really need to learn the rules on some things, especially spoilers. It's amazing how many people argue about getting modded for spoiling something they think is too old.
And there should probably be some consequences for users who directly harass others offsite (reddit, discord, or their own private message board). Not just calling people names, but either literally dangerous or toxic stuff.

Id probably leave, depending on how drastic it was. Id just make a discord (I don't know how to) and invite all my favorite people (too much work)

IMO, I'd say it's less to do with moderators, and more on how other users can detect trolls.

So my opinion has often been there should be more transparency for other users to see through trolls with alts, and for more established users to make themselves known.

A couple of ideas for anti sock puppet alts:

1) All users have an automated flag+state next to their account based on IP address. (controversial a bit, but no big deal imo. Maybe generalize to time zone instead of state)

2) A better posts/day stat (active is not that great a number due to varying boards archive/purge rate)

3) Age of account next to name.

Example: ( Userdude(99) CA,Flag )

That's: User, days old, California, USA

For more established users, I had this idea:

You can choose to make any Poll of the Day result public on your profile. Or private of course.

It's kind of a "get to know you" idea. Trolls prefer to come off as anonymous and many. At least let more established users make themselves more open in an easy natural way. (via poll of the day)

It's a tiny idea, but I think it would help cut down on harassing sock puppetry a bit. (a sock puppet would be less open)

Bonus: It would increase site traffic a bit too, as some would be more likely to be daily visitors to vote.

Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Gamefaqs is the easy mode of fourms, and if you get consistently warned/suspended/banned it's 100% your fault.

Site went to shit when it relaxed trolling rules, and decided that white supremacists/neo Nazis are okay to have on this site.

They can tell, but shitposting and trolling with alts isn't necessarily against the rules.

It's funny how this was the entire reason for the ignore/block features but the users who bitch about alts/shitposters thr most go completely out of their way to avoid it or get around it.

That's a big part of the issue. Lots of people have differing definitions and tolerances for shitposters/trolls.

I suppose that's also part of the logic behind Ignores/Blocks.
