Battle system does not appear to use disposible stickers at the least, so assuming that there are still stickers, maybe they are now "equipment" items? This would be a big improvement on its own, frankly.

Battle system appears to have a ring mechanic that lets you rotate things around, presumably to be able to hit multiple enemies with one attack.

Some screenshots show different levels of HP. This may point to a basic leveling, but we don't know. Hopefully, there is some form of leveling system. Paper Mario games work best by having a level-up system that just increases a couple basic stats (i.e. just HP, any sort of FP/MP should one be present, and some equivalent to BP that lets you equip more of the attacks and other stuff you find from exploration). This is a strong point of Paper Mario (64) and TTYD, as you CAN still become quite powerful without leveling up, and unless you are drastically underleveled AND missing some of the more cheesable badges you can just swap out badges to overcome things rather than having to grind experience points. Levelups in the old games basically just made you able to take more hits (or just heavier hits), use more special attacks before running out of "MP," and bring more methods of fighting to any given fight.

Some form of partners seem to be present (like the bob-omb), but I didn't see one in battle so they may all just be out-of-battle things only. However, the battle we saw looked like it was 50 HP, which is the lowest amount we see among the screenshots showing HP. So the battle we saw may well have been an early battle tutorial for the rotation system (and with any luck, is from before you get a partner).

It could just be some things are permanent and others are consumable. The most ridiculous part of the sticker combat wasn't the concept of it all but rather half your book was stickers of the same fucking jump attack.

Mario also doesn't hold the sticker above his head as he does in the other game so I'm guessing stickers are gone but may be replaced with origami objects that work like Thing stickers.

So basically you always have jump + hammer and then a list of consumable things.

My guesses anyway.

I appreciate innovation in games, but its also weird how they drastically changed the formulas in several successful game series. Still waiting on proper sequels to Star Fox, whatever the last 3d metroid was, and Paper Mario.

Something that bothers me:

2D art almost always borders characters and objects with black lines of varying thickness. There are occasional exceptions which use colored lines or white lines, but they're quite rare. The first 3 Paper Mario games use the black lines.
Stickers are typically made with white borders on the outside. Paper Mario Sticker Star, leaning into the sticker aesthetic, decided to add white borders around the existing black borders. It doesn't look very good, and it only made sense for that one game, where they were supposed to be stickers instead of normal paper.
The obnoxious white border has persisted.

Also, the whole thing where in the first three games, being paper was just a thing. Sure, Mario could roll up into various shapes, and in Super they extended this to the whole world of paper being 2D unless you flip into 3D, but it was more a footnote than anything. An aesthetic choice.
In SS, CS, and now OK, they're leaning deeper and deeper into writing the whole game around "they're paper so they do paper things and the story is that they're paper and the jokes are also all about how they're paper".
